Hey everyone.
I don't own a Splawn amp, but I'm sick of my craptacular solid state Crate, and I want to buy a new amp. The Nitro is one of the top contenders.
It seems like of all the clips I've seen, all the users aren't using the tone I want, or the tone is diluted in the recording. What I need is tons of tight low end that won't get muddy or lose clarity. Mids that are aren't too crunchy, but enough to make the tone thicker, fuller, and not thin. Treble is usually what I scoop back, to around noon. I want treble that's not scratchy or with too much bite, but enough to give more definition and clarity to the notes. All in all, a thick, heavy, booming sound that you can feel thud in your chest, that doesn't get muddy.
I know this is very specific, but any amp I'm going to invest two grand in has to be able to get the tone I want. Will the Nitro be able to get a tone like this?

hey bro,
I hope I answer this well enough for ya. Anyways, you are going to see a definite improvement. It will be a crazy beyond belief improvement I would imagine.
Can ya get tons of low end without it getting muddy or losing clarity? -Depends how ya dial it. By all means this is possible. It has ridiculous amounts of low end, yet it can still remain clear on the top end just fine. If you set it right, it will rip right through.
Mids too crunchy? - again, how you dial it. The nitro has more focus in the lower mids, imagine a more pissed off, cleaner, clearer, more refined uberschall. All the qualities of the uberschall I liked were there, and at the same time all the bad qualities weren't there.
Treble scratchy? - nah, it more of a roar that a bite. It can be muddy if ya don't dial it right, but thats because it is a really bottom heavy amp. YES you can feel it in your chest too!
Hope that helps, and for 2k its one of the best amps out there for the price. Also I recommend the sovtek kt88's for what your are looking today, I think it may give you more instant gratification.
Take care, Josh

Ah...... the ol' Crate days. My very first amp was a solid state 1x12 Crate combo. Then after that I moved up to a Crate half stack. I still remember the fact that the louder you turn it up the crappier it sounded. Is this the case with your amp? I don't mean this to be any disrespect to you or your playing ability btw, it's more of a general bash on Crate's quality.
I've had my Nitro less than a week and you'd have to get the jaws of life to get this thing outta my hands. Mine has the same KT88's joshsage recommended, so +1 to that. Everything you described in terms of tone I think this amp can deliver abundantly (in my opinion of course).
What other amps are you considering besides the Nitro?
If none of the sound clips you heard or none of the videos you saw match the tone your looking for, please give me some bands that have the tone you are looking for. That way me or whoever else can better establish what tone you're shooting for.
Ultimately it's your decision on what amp to buy and if it is actually worth what you paid for it. Everyone has opinions but yours is the only one that matters in regards to your purchase.

This is more of a general comment. I have a QR not a Nitro. But, I will say no matter what model you choose... you'd be hard pressed to find more bang for the buck. Splawn's build quality and customer service are second to none. And of course... the amps sound amazing! I had a Framus Cobra and it was one of the amps I sold to buy the QR. They basically cost the same and there's no comparison as far as build quality. They are different beasts and have different tonal qualities, so I'm not comparing that. I was looking for a different sound and that's why I went with the QR. Just wanted you to know that if you do pull the trigger on a Nitro, you'll get an amp that's built like a tank and backed by a first class company.

Just got my Splawn 2x12 with one v30 and one governor and the sound with my Nitro is just as you described! Never thought a cab would make that big of a difference but it sure does! G

Wow! First off guys, let me say that you all seem very friendly (unlike other boards I've been to) and my questions were answered very well. I still remember the fact that the louder you turn it up the crappier it sounded. Is this the case with your amp? Yes! RRGH! God, I hate that. It sounded fine in the shop (Maybe becuase the amp I played before that was a Fender Frontman. Ha!), but when I got it home the distortion was just disgusting. I've improved it a bit with an Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff distorting the clean channel. But as soon as the volume goes past 1.5, my satisfactory bedroom tone is out the window. What other amps are you considering besides the Nitro? Rivera Knucklehead Tre, a custom TITAN amp, Carvin V3, perhaps an ENGL Powerball. If none of the sound clips you heard or none of the videos you saw match the tone your looking for, please give me some bands that have the tone you are looking for. That way me or whoever else can better establish what tone you're shooting for. Alot of bands I listen to or are familiar with favor more of a scooped mids, spiked treble sound. I want something a bit less generic, you know? If I can think of any bands with this tone, I'll let you know, but I hope my explaination will suffice for now. It has also get occured to me that the reason bands may not use this tone is that it may not blend well with the oher musicians. I don't play in a band, but me and some friends are working on it. Does a really bassy, thick tone tend to drown out everyone else? I mean, the reason I scoop my treble back so far from the bass (same with the mids, on a lesser scale) is that the EQ on the amp and Metal Muff are just too abrasive for me. If the treble was smoothed out, I might use more. How smooth are the highs on this thing?

One of the Splawn cabs? I need that tight low end the most.

I think my Bare Knuckle pup and the active mid boost in my Jackson makes the mids and highs smoother and fatter! G

Which pickup is it? I've been looking at Bareknuckles for a while now.
Is the Mid Boost similar to the gain boost circuit on certain pairs of EMGs?

I have the Nailbomb pup and the boost is a part of the guitar electronics. The pup is passive. G

It explains it all. The Nitro is awesome! You'll love it. It's a whole different ball game when you're playing with a band. You'll find that out once you start gigging. Those mids and treble that you don't like will become your friends to be able to cut through the mix.

Oh yeah, Joshsage's explaination was definitely adequate. My tone question is pretty much answered. The question I'm still unsure on is the cab choice, how my other amp choices compared to the Nitro, and about cutting through in a band (thanks for answering that one!).

Call Scott at the shop and he'll get you squared away on what cab you'll need to get the desired tone you're looking for. The Nitro kicks all kinds of a$$. You'll love that amp.
