Hi, after searching the net trying to decide between buying a JCM 800 and modding it or buying a TSL/DSL I saw the name Splawn. Wow, needless to say I'm impressed.
I think my wife is finally getting to accept the idea of me getting a new amp so I'm looking around.
I have a 25/50 Jubilee full stack. I recently put Svetlana power tubes and Electro Harmonix pre-amp tubes in it and fell in love with it again. I use a EQ pedal to boost the input to get more gain out of it.
But...why am I looking for another amp? (I also have a JSX)
Well I need the versatility of the JSX but the sound of the Marshall. It looks like this may be the place for that. I don't think the DSL or TSL would get me into that JCM800 land I want to be in. I'm pretty sure my Jubilee is just a JCM800 with some added features.
OK, so which model would come close to a high gain version of my amp? i.e. which model sound most like a hot rodded JCM800. I'm thinking QR or Competition.
My amp is 50 watts and I like that setup. but I need to be able to go clean. On my Marshall I can turn off some of the gain with a footswitch but if I have the input gain cranked I still get saturation in my clean.
So, on the single channel Splawns can you get a good clean and high gain and switch back and forth with a flick of the footswithch? Or will I need a two channel?
Well, sorry for being long winded, hopefully I'll have some money in not too long.
Rick

The Jubilee is the best sounding Marshall i've played. The Splawn is more aggressive sounding with more punch and bottom end. What do you need the clean for? If it's just for some clean parts in rock\metal songs I think you'll be fine with a single channel (Competition or Pro Stock) and get your clean by turning down the guitar volume knob, if it's for other types of music and more versatility- you'll need the two channel (QR). BTW the Comp is even more aggressive and stiff than the QR so take that into consideration. Personally I have the Comp and if I could choose all over again i'd probably go with the QR, although i'm not sure just how good the clean really is.

I think Loose summed it up pretty well.

Nah, Loose would sound bad through anything.
If you want to flip between OD and clean at the flick of a footswitch, well, that's the definition of a two-channel amp, isn't it! The Competition cleans up nice at the turn of a volume knob, as this fabulous demonstration shows:
But if you need to click in and out of a clean sound immediately with a footswitch, it's not what you're looking for. There's only one gain control, so even if you switch from 2nd Gear OD2 (which is like a raging 800) to 1st Gear OD1 (hot Plexi) there's still going to be plenty of dirt in there until you turn down the gain or your guitar's volume.
Looks like you might want to buy the QR, and use it on 50 watts if that's your preferred power section.

Dang Ayt, those are some spiders on the ends of your arms. Sounds great, but for those of us bringing down the brimstone with humbuckers, getting that clean is not so easy!

OK cool guys. Thanks. I was kinds hoping in the back of my head I could save a few bucks with the single channel but I gotta be realistic with myself, I need (want?) two channels. I mean I already have the single channel amp i need. That video does remind me of my Jubilee somewhat.
I was just playing Gods of Wrath from Metal Churches first album if you guys know that one. My amp sound almost exactly like that with the eq boost. But when I go clean, which is a fast change in the song, I have to hit two foot switches (EQ pedal and amp gain switch) and flip my pickup switch to get a good clean sound. It's not easy to do quickly.
Now I'm gonna sit back and wait for money to fall from the sky, lol
Rick
Oh ya I almost forgot, I tried running one of those Loopbone pedals that has the slingshot remote control so all I'd have to do is hit one switch but it works in reverse. When I kick out the eq channel it kicks on my amps gain. I tried reversing the polarity in a cord but it made no difference. Anyway just though I'd throw that in.

The Hot Plexi mode is where Im at home with BUT boosted with the grey mod EVO and Vision Music pedals, my MOR-Drive has shipped so Im gonna compare the grey mods to my new signature pedal, I hope it rocks against the grey mods, any-who when you BOOST the 1st gear Plexi channel on the Competion 50 watt QR is KILLER PURE/Articulate brown better sounding marshall tones. Love marshalls, but the Comp is what marshall wishes they made LOL!
