I am now ... roughly 18 hrs into the game. I am still on Disc 1, however (I'm compulsive about keeping my party buffed). I have still yet to get to the main storyline, also. I think I'm on Chapter 4 at the moment. (Cardiannon mothership)
If you are a fan of SO, then you will really enjoy this game. It's very smooth, has great graphics/audio, and the combat system is a joy. The only minus thus far is that it's too easy to do item creation now, which is the opposite of the impossibly hard item synthesis system on SO3.

i LOVED this game!! i have gone through it once and have to beat the ethereal queen yet and I'll be done,i beat Gabriel 3 times to gauge my progress so i know if i am ready for the b1tch and i beat his 6 wing form and used only one resurrection unit so i think i am ready. i agree that the item creation is much easier on this one(i spent 10-12 hours on til the end of time crafting just a few of the better item/armor/weapons) but as lee corso would say..not so fast my friend, later in the game you have to get items from Gabriel and the queen to forge the best armor and weapons so it gets tougher.my party/weapons/ armor/accessories are...
Edge-Level 255-imperial sword(synths..+30%hp dam..+25% hp dam..+5%int/def/att/hit boost x2) universal armor(synths def+30% x2..5% int/att/def/hit x2) and the ALMIGHTY buffed tri emblum(you can synth 8 tri-emblems to one tri-emblum for 8x the awesomeness!!) and the solo battle necklace.
Remi-Level 255(this chick HAMMERS!!) mediumistic bow(same synths as edge) Valkyrie garb(same synths as edge)buffed tri-emblum and team battle necklace(at this level with these buffs when you string together 6 of her crimson squall attacks for the full 280% damage bonus the last attack(which hits 6 times) takes a average of 20000-25000 PER HIT!!! i take control of her for boss fights and Bacchus for multi enemy fights
Bacchus-Level 255- symbol cannon tempest(same synths as edge) plate of the lost monarch(same synths as edge) buffed tri-emblum and blue talisman
Sarah-level 200-Valkyrie garb(same synths as edge)victory lance(same synths as edge) buffed tri-emblum and green talisman.
if you need any help pm me or reply to this thread again and I'll be more than happy to help you out with some REALLY AWESOME cheats and ways around some of the limits and synth cheats!!..for example, there is a level cap of 200 until you obtain 50% of that characters battle trophies!! metal scumbag farming for INSANE exp gains..theiving scumbag farming for INSANE fol gains.(a tri-emblem costs 2 million fol and you need to buy 8 to buff one tri-emblum..but you only have to do it once since there is another way to get the 3 more you need for your full party without buying 24 more tri-emblems!! my attack and defense on all characters(nor Sarah) is maxed out..9999 attack...9999 defense!!
let me know your progress..i like to be overleveled too when i play these thing so I'll tell ya if you are on track because some of the bosses are nasty!! if you are not ready for them they'll kick hell outta ya even when you are having no problem with the area monsters!! i have 112 hrs on it and i will need about another 6-7 to get through the wandering dungeon to fight the queen so i am still playing it..is lymle KAAAYYY!! gettin on your nerves yet?? LOL i turned her voice off after 20 hours!!
ENJOY!!

Well it lookks like I have something to spend my birthday funds on. I loved Second Story on the PS1 but wasn't too keen on the PS2 game, for some reason preferring Xenosaga. With so many awesome RPG's on the PS2, I was spoiled for choice. But The Suikoden franchise has always been great and I always liked Wildarms and Shadowhearts.

I've never been a Suikoden fan.
Xenosaga is a great a STORY, but by the 3rd game you are just going through the game to push the story forward; not very challenging on a strategic level. NOTHING like Star Ocean in terms of depth of play! That being said, KOS-MOS is probably one my favourite rpg characters of all time!

Brian, thanks for the detailed and enthusiastic post!
Will you be playing FF XIII when it comes out? Have you played the demo that came with the JP release of Advent Children yet? If not, do so -- highly recommended!

No idea why I love Suikoden so much, I think it's the stars of destiny vibe. It's an odd thing when a game like Mass Effect is probably my favourite of the XBOX RPG's, manly as it's so unlike the old FF/Mana style games I'm more used too. Oh and I picked up SO: Second Evolution today. Not sure if it's any good but it looks pretty.

Brian, thanks for the detailed and enthusiastic post! Will you be playing FF XIII when it comes out? Have you played the demo that came with the JP release of Advent Children yet? If not, do so -- highly recommended! i have a weeks vacation saved for it already!! April can not get here fast enough for me. but no i have not played the demo,i was going to import it as the stand alone game since a few places have it for sale but it is 50 bucks for a one hour demo..that is a bit steep ,but that being said if it was in English i probably would anyway..no strike that..I WOULD!! how does it play?? i saw the demo online and on g4 TV coverage of e3 but that is it. i like the battle system idea with different commands taking up a slot of different sizes on the time bar so you can do more than one action per character per round.

It plays really well. I played through it twice, just totally guessing, and then I had a friend come over that reads JP, and she translated most of the menus for me, and that's when I started really figuring out how to chain the combos together. You can do some DEVASTATING combos in that game!
Look/feel wise, it's very FF, aka brilliant.
My only gripe with the demo is that the camera control is a bit wonky and I always invert and it's impossible to figure out how to do it in Japanese. I adjusted okay to it, but am really looking forward to the final version.

hows star ocean coming along for ya??? Unfortunately, I only get to play on weekends! And I'm one of those weidos that will take a vacation day every now and then just so I can play for several hours consecutively. It's takes me FOREVER to complete a game; the shortest one thus far was 9 months for Xenosaga 3. It took me almost 2 years to get 100% on FF XII.

Thats funny I just beat the main story this morning. I had about 50 hrs on it. I'm not going after the super bosses. All that leveling seems like not much fun. My characters are only at lv 50 or so and I though that was high untlill I started looking into the Ethereal Quean and Gabriel Celeste. People are leveling up to like 200 just to take on these bosses!
All in all it is a solid rpg. Much better than that crap Square Enix put out before this... ie Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant. Those 2 games were so bad I couldn't play though them. I had almost lost hope on Enix until I picked up this little gem. Lets hope that FFXIII takes it's ques from this game and not those other 2 crapfests. If it ever comes out that is.

it is really not that bad to level up FAST!!! you just have to know where to go and what to do,you could be at 200 in about 4 hours!!! and if the level cap is removed you could be up to 255 with your main party in about 2 more on top of that. i only built my reserve party enough to have them last long enough to get a resurrection unit out and that is it!! LOL..
and honestly all the extras, crafting, synthing, and bonus bosses ARE what star ocean are all about, without them it is just a good rpg with them they're great!! try it out man..don't give up and yeah..at level 50 you will not make it off of the first floor of the cave of the seven stars..one or two battles would be it..the difficulty really gets cranked a few times over after the last boss goes down.
i was 70-75 when i beat the last boss and then loaded the save game to get the bonus stuff and beat the undying dragon with little trouble to get the darkness ring as well..then got MURDERED in the first battle in the cave of the seven stars(the first bonus dungeon!!)
i have done everything but beat the Queen and am on my way to do that in the next few hours!! talking about it has me itching to play it again!!

hey twilightodyssey..play it anymore?? i just beat the 4 and 6 wing versions of Gabriel Celeste and the 2 and 4 wing versions of the queen..the 4 wing queen was TOUGH!!!! she has around 44 million hp and starts spamming supernova really quick (around 50% hp left as opposed to 25% left in her 2 wing mode) and from what I've read her 6 wing form is KILLER!! she starts spamming supernova right away and pretty much stays in rush mode the whole time! and has 66 million hp..got to try it!!
PEACE!!

I've had too many gigs this summer, so all gaming (aside from PnP rgp playing and FF VII on PSP) has been put on a hold until after Labor Day! And then I'll re-tackle Star Ocean while counting down the days until White Knight Chronicles is released!!

Okay, Summer gigging is over, and we're back in the studio for preproduction, which means -- more time for gaming!!
I'm currently on either a)Earth of the past or b)some strange parallel Earth. About to enter the military facility!
