Hey Chrismac, do you remember what your amp settings were on your Little Wing clip. I remember that you said you were using second gear. I even had my wife listen a few times and she thought it was great. I could not pull up the clip the last time I tried so I am guessing that it has since been deleted. Do you have a CD? The modded DOD YJM & 250 pedals work great with a Strat and a Splawn IMHO. I have not tried it with anything other than a Strat.

I cannot sit idly by while this lovely thread is pushed to the second page by a slew of "Splawn vs ShamWow" parody threads! John, love the pedal, but you probably guessed that by now. I hope my basic recording tips help you better capture what it can do. It's tough to compare sounds with memory, but my impression of the modded pedal versus the stock YJM 308 original is that the mod is rounder, smoother, warmer, more musical. Don't get me wrong, I was able to get some decent Malmsteen tones out of the stock pedal, but it was kind of scratchy and 'peaky' sounding, thinner, a bit harder. Amazingly, the first day I got the pedal back I thought it was going to be a bust. I had only minutes to try it out before leaving the house, and it sounded all weird and fat. However, it just sets up different to the stock pedal is all, and the next day when I had time to dial it in, well, it just sprung to life, and that's when I threw together that clip. There's a sudden hump on the Gain control that, if you go past it, kind of swamps out your tone and over saturates it. As the circuit is so authentic, I assume this is the same on the old 250s. Below that point you've got pure singing neo-classical magic; you just need to learn how to set it up. Though Yngwie apparently still uses his favorite 250s in the studio, on which this mod is based, the tones I'm getting remind me much more strongly of his sounds from the beginning up to the early 1990s. (My recent change to Greenbacks probably accentuates this.) With that I'd just like to repeat my plea not to make any more pedals for anyone else. This could be my tone secret! How about making a Takasaki pedal, huh? Yeah, you'd enjoy that, that's what to do. Or move to Nebraska and paint wooden chairs. ![](http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9733/hk308pedal.jpg)

Thanks for the info Outlier. I want to get one of your pedals soon, but I have another piece of gear on my immediate radar. I just noticed that both you and Vision Music are located in Tennessee. Maybe Tennessee can start putting a picture of these pedals on state license plates since all the best pedals seem to be coming from their state. Just a Thought? The Tone State. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Man I want to visit Tennessee while we're here, but it'll have to be in winter as I wilt like a daisy in any heat. Don't be in too of a hurry. This state honestly sucks for music equipment, save for a few spots in Nashville. Music stores in Memphis are non-existent (save for one shop where they treat you like an ignorant child and think that all amps are inferior to Mesa Boogies and Bogners). Past that we have a Guitar Center and a few "family music" stores that carry cheap import stuff, and that's it. I wish Lynne Burk (Blues City Music) would open a store front...

Also, which would be better to have modded, the YJM308 or DOD250? Or would they sound the same after the mod? I'm very interested.

Ok guys I cannot say enough about outlier's mod on this pedal. I love it! I have not put my guitar down since I got this thing. I owned that old DOD pedal for years and hated it. I never used it cause it was so raspy sounding and brittle. I originally got this pedal modded to use when I play in church. I can't turn up there so I use a line 6 on the clean channel and use a Sonny boy OD and the DOD to get that tone that I like to play with. I throw a Decimator in the line and Voila I have my hot rodded Splawn gain at a very low volume. This thing makes that set up sound so good! Very warm smooth sounding OD now and makes playing effortless. Ok here's the part where I kind of have to put my tail between my legs a bit. I used this the other day with my Splawn. As you know I'm not big on boosting my Splawn amp (and I've kind of downed on peeps that have done that). Never been a fan of doing it as every pedal I ever tried doing it with sounded absolutely horrible. TS-9's, 808's, DS-1's, Hot drive N boost, etc. etc. etc. etc. all sounded like garbage. They stole the tone in one way or another. Be it adding too much mushy bass, shrill treble, barking midrange, they did all of that. I hated all of them in that application. So I was never a fan of boosting as you can see. However.........I stand corrected. Outlier's mod has made my strat (I prefer single coils to humbuckers) come alive. I've been running Gear 2 OD1 at about 10:00 on the gain and running the DOD pedal at about 12:00 on the gain and it is perfect!!!! My strat is on steroids! The pedal is smooth and does not rob the Splawn of any tone whatsoever. It actually makes it sound better. It cleans up very nicely when backing off volume while the pedal is engaged. This thing is great and you should all check out his mod. Great guy to do business with and honestly I think this mod is going to blow wide open in a short time. I'll do a clip with the pedal as soon as I get a chance. I'm kind of swamped at the moment so it'll be a few weeks before I can find time to do something. Conact Outlier and get one of these pedals!!!!! Glad you guys dig the OD250/YJM308 Outlier mods, I TOLD YOU GUYS! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Ayton, that's fairly close to the settings I use on my pedals. I'm glad it worked out for you. As I'd said elsewhere, my mod is perhaps a bit different in that I am not necessarily blueprinting to the original schematic as per the other modders. Instead, I am basically seeking to duplicate a '70s variant of the 250, which I have determined that Yngwie has used to get his sounds. I'll say one thing though: Yngwie's more recent works, I think he's using a stock 308. There's a far more shrill character to his sound than in years past. It's especially evident on Young Guitar videos of the last few years. Ahout the choice of either a 250 or 308 for a modification platform, it doesn't really matter. Either one works just as well. Get a 250 if you're worried that say, the Blues Snobbes might turn up their noses at you if they see an Yngwie pedal in front of you. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Otherwise, no difference.

Don't be in too of a hurry. This state honestly sucks for music equipment, save for a few spots in Nashville. Rock Block Music in town is pretty cool and I've heard good things about Corner Music, just never been there. Sam Ash isn't bad and Guitar Center, is well, Guitar Center... Enough said. Frankly, I was a bit surprised that Nashville didn't have some insanely great music store, especially as before moving here, I used to work at Pianos 'N Stuff in Pittsburgh, PA as a guitar teacher and repair tech: www.pnsmusic.com GREAT store, very pro operation (anyone familiar with the usual flaky and unprofessional crap that goes on in any and all aspects of the music biz can well appreciate that), very well stocked and prices that beat any other store. I stilll buy from them — got my 2007 YJM Strat from them at a price that seriously beat everyone. Have a Blackmore Strat on order, can't wait.

Well isn't that swell – I'm moving to Pittsburgh in about six weeks!
Now I know where to go before we bother about silly things like furniture and appliances.
I don't think YJM takes those aging 250s out of the house/Studio 308.

Huh, small world!
When you go out to Pianos 'N Stuff, look for my friend Steve Jackson, who runs the Used Department. He'll hook you up. (He has one of my pedals too.)
Where are you moving to? We lived in Ross Township before moving here.
OK, if you are moving to Pittsburgh, either you or your wife have family there and/or you are moving for a healthcare job... Those are the two reasons for moving to Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh area had (may still, not sure), the most rapidly declining population in the USA.
Here is what else you need to know: Pizza Italia in Bloomfield, Fiori's Pizza on Capitol Avenue, Mineo's Pizza in Squirrel Hill, Beto's Pizza on Banksville Road, Vinnie's Pizza out in Churchill, or somewhere around there.
Good Indian food places, better than Nashville.
No good Mexican restaurants. None.
Primanti's, several locations. Has been featured more than once on the food shows.
Quaker Steak & Lube, several locations. Has been featured on Man V. Food. That will be one of my first stops when I am in Pittsburgh in a few weeks.
I believe that about covers it for now.

IHow about making a Takasaki pedal, huh? Yeah, you'd enjoy that, that's what to do. I've actually had an idea for a few years to do just that... I don't want to get into details, as when I do, these details tend to end up in someone's eBay listings about a day or two later [whistling...], but it's something I'd like to do and what's more, I could do. I just wonder if there'd be any interest besides me and about two other guys... I even have a working name for it... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I'm going out on a limb and assuming you enjoy... *closes eyes, consults the netherworld* ...pizza! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. Good pizza and Indian is essential (as is good Thai and Chinese but I'm sure every city has something edible from those cuisines) but Mexican is no great loss for this British boy. We only go for Mexican maybe twice a year at the moment, and the wife has learnt to make excellent guacamole and chili anyway so I'm taken care of. I'm not quite sure I can eat somewhere called Steak and Lube. Do they change my oil while I get a sirloin? Speaking of such, with the music and food taken care of, the only other thing I need is a good car place you trust to work on your ride. Those are hard to find! We'll actually be living somewhere south of Pittsburgh (not sure exactly where yet) as the job is down in Washington county and we want to live halfway between that and the city. I've heard Pittsburgh is a bit like Glasgow (my hometown) so I'm excited to check it out. You could always sell your soul and double market the new pedal as Takasaki/Laiho since he uses that preamp thingy. I don't mind, anything that stops you selling my Yngwie tone secret to everyone else! ;D
