Hi all. I'm wondering how the Nitro handles low gain applications, such as blues or light drive jazz fusion??? Seems the QR would do fairly well in this area.
;D ;D

I would say it handles it fine.I love to bring the gain down to about 9 with a delay in the loop and maybe add my OD808 and it has a great little blues sound.Another thing is if you have single coils or the ability to split your humbuckers, then you can get into the SRV category of tones.Or,you can just back off the volume knob and it cleans up really well..There is a video of Scott playing one of the first Nitro`s where he plays a little with the volume backed off and it sounds killer.

It does it ok. I myself prefer to use an overdrive pedal on the clean channel with the clean's gain knob cranked. With the KT88/6550's, the clean headroom is nearly limitless so you can get a bit of extra punch from the clean channel by raising the gain much higher than you can with EL34's and then hit it with an overdrive pedal for a VERY nice smooth low gain tone.
It's either that or roll the guitar's volume knob back on the OD channel but the gain on the nitro goes from nothing to balls out more or less immediately... kinda like the volume taper (or lack thereof) on the old fender tube amps.

In the praise and worship band I'm in I keep the gain arond 9 oclock or less and it sounds great. I wouldn't really call it a bluesy sound or gain structure. If I was playing blues or jazz i would be considering a QR or competition. The nitro's low voicing doesn't lend itself well to the blues. I use the nitro with another amp that has a traiditional marshall voicing so the nitro just kinda gives me the the bottom end I wanted to add. fastredponycar is right about the overdrive on the clean channel, but I don't think the clean channel by itself has a very bluesy sound either. The lack of a mid control is prolly what kills it for me. Swapping the 12ax7's for lowe gain tubes would give you lower gain. Bottom line, this is high gain amp, but if you have bluesy fingers and keep the gain down you'll prolly like it. YOu never know til you try it.

I would try a Pro Mod. The one I had did blues great. It also did Hard Rock / Metal too and with a od pedal it was awesome.
That being said I sold it and have had a Nitro for a bit now. If you put lower gain 12at7 / 12au7 preamp tubes in along with KT88 power tubes you will acheive many of the Pro Mod tones.
