I would like to get a Quick Rod with Mullard EL34's, but I'm sure that one day I would like to stick Genalex or JJ KT-88's in the amp.
My question is: If I get a Pro Mod can I swap back & fourth between KT-88's & EL34's easily (only having to bias), or will I need to change out the resistor to go back to EL34's??
I would love to stay the hell away from the Sovtek KT-88's, but I also want to make it easier to put a better brand of KT-88's in my amp in the future. This might be a special request, but is there any way that you guys think Scott would make a Pro Mod without including the power tubes for a slightly cheaper price tag?? The Pro Mod badge would also help with the resale value.

I think the answer is no. I asked a similar question on the forum last year and someone sent me detailed instructions on how to open up the amp and remove a resistor (or something like that). Apparently that's necessary or you may create some problems. I'm not that technical, so I didn't do anything.
Ask the question in the QR forum -- there's a lot more lookers in there. You're more likely to get a knowledgeable response.

I would call him and ask if he will ship one without tubes. If you get a QR with the Tung Sol EL34Bs it is going to have a bigger tighter bass than the Mullards. Really similar to having KT88s. I have a QR with KT88s and one with Tung Sols now. I'm kinda torn, but the mid bark of the Tung Sols along with about the same amount of bass and tightness has me liking the Tung Sols. Also I have found the Tung Sols seem to like a colder bias right at 30MA on the hottest tube. Scott sent me a set that is .8 MA max diffference between all of the tubes. I have never had a set of tubes this closely matched before. I have been biasing at 30.5 to 31.5 MA on my QR and the Nitro I had with Rubys, Shugangs, and Mullards. The Tung Sols didn't like that range and were too stiff and lifeless. I backed them down to 30-29.2 MA and they sing. Kinda weird, but whatever works. At least they will last longer at the lower bias and not go nuclear after 9 months.

No, you cannot just swap the tubes & bias it up from Quickrod to Promod or vice versa. Need to add/subtract a resistor...which is very simple...to make it work. Easy mod to so...since you have to take the head out of the chassis to swap the tubes anyways...IMO.

I played it safe & got a QR with Mullards. I should be getting it this week!!! I too heard that if you're interested in KT-88's you would be better off going with Tung Sol EL34b's too. It will make my life easier & I won't have to worry about squashing the mids.

Cool man! Enjoy it! Its a great amp. I did have the Tung Sol EL34Bs in the amp before the mod...totally different than the KT88s's & then the 6550's (which are best all around IMO) that i put in it. Everyones got their tastes,, but i wasnt a fan of the Tung Sol EL34s. I even tried KT77s before the mod. They sounded better than the 34's. But enuff of me ranting. Enjoy your QR!!

I didn't think the Splawns would take KT-77's, much less 6550's... Hmmm.

I prefer the SED Winged C 6550's. They sound great & are super reliable. I have used the Tung Sols also. They sound great too. Just more of a taste thing with the SED's. ;D

Why does no one like the Sovtek KT88's? and what is the main diff between the 88's and the 77's? or the 6550's? You don't have to mod to change from 88's to 77's correct? but you do if you go to the 6550's correct?

Other way around actually. you need to change a resistor to go form 88's to 77's but 6550's are the equivalent of KT88's, no change needed.
