Hi everyone, I'm not a current Splawn owner (though I plan on it soon) and that's why I'm posting. I was initially turned to Splawn by the Nitro. I'd always wanted a nice heavy sound that wasn't just German death metal scoop, and the Nitro seems to really sit nicely between crunchy Marshall and chunky, tight low end. I heard the Nitro, fell in love with the tone, all was well... UNTIL I came to the website, checked out the Quickrod and realized that that was some mighty fine tone. Upon further checking into it the Super Comp seems like a great bet - I'm not too worried about having a dedicated clean (and single channel simplicity has always caught my eye) but I'm wondering: 1) Does the Super Comp actually get MORE aggressive than the Nitro since there is no clean channel? (I read that here somewhere) and most importantly 2) With the mode switched on (or off, I'm not sure which way is which) how close does the Super Comp get to the Quickrod 3rd gear sound? Thanks so much in advance for your help. Seems like a great community here and Scott, from my limited communication with him, seems like a FANTASTIC dude to deal with. I look forward to becoming a Splawn owner in however long the wait time is .

My Pro Stock (if you don't already know) is a 100watt Quick Rod w/o the clean and it gets a bit more aggresive then your standard QR does (the guys at Splawn will tell you the same). I can't say for sure about the S.C. since I don't have it yet but my guess would be yes, it would be a bit more aggressive. As for getting close to QR 3rd gear tone, if you have EL34's in it I would think you'll get pretty close. However the S.C. is specifically voiced for a bigger low end and the mids are a bit different so it won't be exact. Good luck w/ your choice. You really can't go wrong w/ a Splawn.

Like Supercharged, I have a Pro Stock and a Super Comp. Both are 100 watts with EL34s. I also used to have a Nitro w/ KT88s. I would say the Super Comp has a little bit more gain/saturation on tap than my Nitro did. That could be due to the difference between EL34s and KT88s. Regardless, I much prefer the EL34s in the Nitro/Super Comp circuit as the added mids help the amp cut through in a live setting.
As for the second question, yes the Super Comp will get pretty close to the QR gear 3 tones. It's not quite the same, however, as there is still more saturation in the Super Comp. I guess it would be best to say that it sounds close but "feels" a little different. Also there is WAY more gain available on the Super Comp. Noon on the Super Comp is roughly similar to the QR gear 3 with the gain maxed....

So do you think I'd be better off going for a QR or a Pro Stock and using a boost pedal to get into the heavier territory, or buying the Super Comp and just tweaking and playing with my volume knob to tame it?

I use my volume knob w/ my Super Comp to tame it . It works great for me . I'll switch to a single coil for great blues clean tones . I've never used a clean channel though , I've always used the volume knob for dirty cleans .

Using less or more gain won't turn one amp into the other, the big difference between the QR and Nitro is in the voicing, the Nitro is more lower midrange heavy and more modern with more saturation, and the QR is more 80's with more upper midrange and awesome punch.

I see your point, but what I'm trying to get at is that throwing a boost pedal like a Tubescreamer in front of any amp can certainly cause a big shift in how tight the bottom end is/how punchy it is/boosting the mids, etc.. Likewise, rolling back the volume knob on say, a strat (which is what I play primarily) certainly changes more than just the amount of gain. Or pulling the gain way back on something like a Nitro and boosting it with a more Marshall/QR-y style boost. Honestly, I think my best bet is to buy two amps, but I'm reluctant to buy two amps when I've never even played a Splawn before (and can't get access to one until I buy one - there are NONE in my area).

in my experience, it is easier to cop QR tones with the super comp than the other way around...

If you need the bottom end, don't try to go QR...not at all
The whole no clean channel thing, has NO effect on the overdrive channel, it doesn't make it meaner, however if you get a 50 watter, you may can get it a little pissier... I prefer 100 watters, more watts, more clarity... or so it has always been for me.
I think everyone else summed the most of it up!
Good luck!
