What are your opinions on these different constructions? I'm still deciding what I'm going to order on my 412 to go with my QR. I've only ever owned rear-loaded cabs.

I have a front loaded Ear candy 2x12. It sounds unbelieveable, it projects really well and sounds way bigger than a 2x12 should. But it can be a bit, beamy, if that makes sense. It will tear you head off if it is pointed right at ya. That sort of thing. I have heard a front loaded VHT 4x12 cab that sounded really nice. I hate to say it, but it may have lots to do with the speaker chosen as well (some speakers may work better front vs rear loaded).

The front loaded cabs do sound different for a whole host of reasons. Earcandy, Lopo and Soldano are just 3 manufacturers. I think you lose some base response but gain some presence. It is very speaker dependent so its hard to really tell. The front loaded cabs are generally stronger since they are built as one solid unit. If you plan on experimenting with speakers they are great since its very easy to change them. If you want maximum bass response, I would go with rear loaded. The front loaded lopo cabs are cheap enough to get on ebay so you can afford both.

If you want maximum bass response, I would go with rear loaded. Funny you should mention that... between my Splawn and VHT i find the VHT to have more bass response. In fact while jammin both cabs i tend to find all my bottom end comes from the VHT & the Splawn creates a nice clear top end to it. A great combo actually.

I don't know which cabs you have but in a closed back cabinet, bass is generally determined by the the cabinet depth. If you have a VHT Fat Bootom 2x12 that is 14 inches deep, and are comparing it to the Splawn 2x12 OS at 12 inches deep, you may get more bass with the VHT. Obviously speakers have a huge impact as well. It's important to compare apples to apples.
The front loaded cabs though make swapping speakers much easier!
