Wow. Ok. I did some experimenting with the preamp tubes. I have the KT88's in my head right now and also did all testing at half power.
By putting a JJ ECC82 12au7 in the 3rd socket from the left side of ther amp when looking at the back it made my nitro have probably 50% of the gain and rounded it a bit effectively making it sound very very close to my Pro Mod with a bit touch more tight/deep on the bottom end. Very cool.
If I put the JJ ECC82 12au7 in the first position when looking at the back of the amp it makes the clean Channel really much more usable as a clean and not really usable as a gritty clean channel which is a HUGE plus for me.
If I put the JJ ECC82 12au7 in the 2nd position when looking at the back of the amp it cuts the volume massively and also the gain stage by a lot. I really did not like it in this spot at all but you might be looking for some different tones so...

And lastly. If I put the ECC82 12au7 tube in the 4th preamp spot when looking through the back of the amp it cleans up the gain a bit, makes the taper much longer to become saturated and also makes the amp more tight sounding with at lower gain settings. It takes a little bit of the thud out of the amp too. Also, It makes the Volume cut a lot and also pretty much rids the need for me to put a volume pedal in the loop or use a hot plate for lower level settings. It retains its balls but at a much more friendly volume. This is something a lot of people have complained about so for the 10 bucks for a tube this makes it worth it just for this alone.
If you own one of these amps you really need to buy one of these tubes and experiement. There are a ton of big tonal changes that can be made by using a low gain preamp tube.
I need to get another one and try both in 2 spots.
I am also combining the 12au7 with a gt12ax7 and getting some really great tones too.
Again, I have the KT88's in my head right now and also did all testing at half power.
Anyone else ever try this?
