On the 100W or 120W Splawns, the half power switch cuts off the 2 outer power tubes which requires that the ohms be set to half the speaker load.
Now, with a Competition, it's Pentode (50W) to Triode (25W). The manual does not clearly state that running the amp in Triode requires an ohms setting adjustment. Does it?
Also, tonally speaking, is there a difference between Pentode and Triode?

Rules of thumb: 1. Given a mainstream circuit for a pentode you can leave the same impedance setting after engaging the Triode switch - no different adjustment setting necessary ! 2. Setting the impedance selector to 4Ohm and connecting a 16Ohm Speaker cab let's feel the amp a load of 16Ohm although it expects 4Ohms. By providing higher load impedances output power decreases (regardless whether you use pentodes or triodes) but pentodes put more emphasis on odd order harmonics. HiFi-Freaks won't like that. And all books recommend to adjust the impedance selector to the value recommended - at least as far as pentodes are concerned. 3. EL34 in Triode mode is sounding different (some people report Triode mode to sound more brown) but i can give further details after my competition made it's way to Germany.

Switching between pentode and triode does NOT require adjusting the ohm switch. So, if you have an 8 ohm cab, you run it in 8 ohms regardless of if you are pentode or triode.
My feeling about the pentode/triode thing. The triode mode to me is greasier and looser with maybe a little more hair. It is easier to play, but does not have the percussiveness or "balls" of the pentode mode. I like both modes as they have their advantages.

It cuts a little volume and gain. It doesn't to much else. I Like it for playing blues leads. Has anyone boosted the front end of a Comp in triode mode?

Triode sounds quite different to me. It's like the same tone but heard on AM where pentode is FM. Lo-fi versus hi-fi. I love it. It's a lot easier to play, looser, really flows. And it sounds great at apartment/bedroom level without using the loop, which I really see as its big bonus. What triode always reminds me of is VH's tone on the Beat It solo, an all time favorite of mine. Liquid leads. So maybe it is more "brown." Pentode has a lot more power, brightness, articulation, and balls. And needs to be turned up to sound warm. Each is a tool for a given job. I use both. That's why there's a switch. PS: no one ever listens, but Triode operation is 60%, so 30 watts, not 25.

I'm going to be a newbie to Pentode/Triode w/ my Super Comp and I really had no idea what to expect. I'm looking foward to it.
