would like to hear from SPLAWN owners about using different brand cabs with these heads...
is anyone running MESA RECTO cabs w/vintage 30's through their SPLAWN? if so, thumbs up or down? what other brand cabs work best with these heads in your opinions? specific speaker types, etc?
any info would help...peace~

Welcome.
It really depends on what kind of tone you're going for. Splawn's are already mid-heavy so the mid hump of the V30's turn some people off. The Splawn Smallblock 25's get lots of love here (by me as well). They have a nice flat EQ that works great w/ the Splawn. I have a Splawn cab w/ SB25's, a Mesa halfback 4X12 (sealed) w/ C-90's and an isocab that I switch back and forth between a SB25 (mostly) and a V30. They're all different but all sound great.

I gigged a few times with a QR/Mesa V30 Cab setup, sounded great to me. I'm a V30 fan though, probably more so than a lot of guys around these parts.

My boy Dave runs his Nitro with 2 recto 2X12's...sounds killer....I have 2 Splawn 4X12's (X patterned...THEY RULE) ...but I have practicing with a Rivera 4X12 with Vintage 30's and I LOVE IT. I have been able to use a zoom H4 to record rehearsals...and just with throwing the recorder in the room I can get great tones with that cab.

There is NO perfect speaker for a Splawn. It comes down to what you like, the room acoustics, cabinet structure, what tuning you are using, your amp settings, the list goes on. The one thing I have found to be a fact is Spawns work really well with speakers that absorb tons of power. I'm not a half power fan and prefer running the amp on full all the time. The tone is much more powerful, thicker, and tighter to me. Anyhow I use Texas heats and Governors. The heats are rated at 150watts each so they absorb a lot and don't fart out at gigging volumes. Their tone is pretty neutral with a round bass character. The govs are my favorite tone wise, but don't handle as much swat from the Nitro. Once the Govs got broke in they have a nice growl and smoother mids/highs. I am using drop B tuning though, so what I need from a set of speakers will vary greatly from the needs of someone using standard. As far as V30s I not a big fan of them with a Splawn. The only cab I really thought they sounded good in was a Mills 4X12. Governors are a great option instead of V30s. Govs handle more power and have a smoother character straight out of the box. Once broken in........butter. That's my opinion.

I run my Splawns through a Rect cab loaded with manowars and govs in an x and they sound really good. More open then the marshall 1960a with 75's in it that I run but I do like both the Pro Mod and the Nitro with the Marshall too. I like the pro mod better throught the mesa and the Nitro Better through the Marshall.

I've had bad luck with speaker cabs. I've got a couple of Avatar 2x12s and I'm just not liking them with the Splawn (or my VHT).
I find it's best to take your head down to the store and try these out in person. Since I can't do that with the Splawn cabs or most of the other ones mentioned here, what do you guys think of the Splawn 4x12 vs. the Mills Acoustics? The price on the Splawn is much better, that's for sure.
FWIW, I took my VHT head today and checked out some Orange and Marshall cabs, but I left impressed with the Mesa Stiletto 4x12. Slightly smaller size and good bass and punch. I always thought I didn't like th V30s, but I'm starting to think I was wrong. My old Soldano 2x12 had them and that was a GREAT cab.

I currently run a Mesa 412 with Celestion Black Shadows and a Mesa 212 with V30s. I don't really think either cab compliments the Splawn Quick Rod I own very well. In fact, the Mesa 412 is WAY too bassy for the Splawn.

Kevin, I totally need to A/B your cabs with mine sometime before ordering my own Splawn 412.
