Hey everyone, new to the forum but not new to splawns.
I purchased a used splawn modded 1959slp in 2003 and it was the best amp I've ever played. Unfortunately I had to sell it in 2006 to help pay for school and haven't had an amp since (except for a first act amp i bought just to have something to plug into). I try my best not to be a gear whore so I usually try to buy something once and then concentrate on playing, not reselling it.
Regardless, school is finishing up and I'm finally going to be able to buy a luxury item. I was wondering if there is a big difference between the original splawn modded amps and the new quickrod/nitros.
I never played one with a clean channel though and would really like to get an all in one amp. Just wondering if there is decent headroom before it starts breaking up. I play mostly jazz, and can live with a decent clean channel. But when I want to play rock I love splawn.
Also I would like to know if there is anyway to find a 1987x modded witha clean channel. I'd really like to have a lighter/smaller amp. Also, it would be nice if the cost of these would be lower. And would the 50w vs. 100w make a big difference in clean channel breakup?
I saw scott isn't modding anymore and i've searched almost every classified thing i could think of on the web to find one but haven't. Would it just be easier to find a used quick rod?
I know it's a lot of questions but thanks for reading.

Get yourself the latest version Quickrod and be done with it. Buy it new, it's a steal, you can't hardly buy a decent mass production amp these days (like Mesa or Marshall) for much less and you'll have a lifetime warranty as well.
The new clean channel is really good. It's not JC120 clean if that's what you're after but I'm willing to be it would work well for you. It has lots of headroom, has it's own gain control so if you want to keep it clean at high volumes then you can do so.

I know it's a lot of questions but thanks for reading. I just traded a 2007 QR for a 2003 Splawn modded Marshall and there are differences. The first I noticed is build quality. From the application of the tolex to the parts used...the Splawn is better, no question. Second, the clean channel on the new QR is much more organic, more lush sounding....which sounds really good no doubt. The Splawn modded Marshall sound is dry, which isn't bad, just different. Personally, I kinda like how the notes really pop out at ya. Third, the lead channel. They both have a similar Splawn bark but the QR has gears whereas the modded Marshall does not; so , you'll get more options on the QR distortion channel. Personally, I'm glad that I traded to get a Splawn modded Marshall just because they are hard to find and some what unique. However, in the future, I'll be glad to get a Nitro or a Pro Mod, or a QR. Really you can't go wrong either way as I've never heard anything bad come out of the Splawn shop....
