I'm thinking about pulling apart my 4x12 (with 4 BB's), getting or building an iso cab (perhaps the Grendel) and wiring in a BB's
Anyone have experience with putting BB's into an iso cab and/or the Grendel specifically? Any wattage or wiring issues a cab hacking noob like me should know about? Is there a better unloaded iso cab out there?

I got a new Grendel iso-cab in several days ago, and with the valiant assist of Supercharged 350, I'm trying to get it dialed in for recording. When I have a revelation I'll post it. I can tell you that Grendel customer service blows big time...

Hey Nevets, thanks, i'll be very curious what you figure out and what you think about the quality of the Grendal...
What was your bad experience with Grendal's Customer Service anyway? I know i'm spoiled by the customer service from Splawn, WCR and a few others but i'm always surprised when small companies have crappy service...

Havoc: re: Grendel... I hate to air dirty laundry in public, but you asked! ;-) There was some chatter several months ago on the HCAF regarding Grendel and poor service - but I went ahead and made a purchase anyway.
Grendel has no phone number. Know this first.
I did receive one e-mail letting me know that my rig would be delayed - with is fine. Then that deadline passed and after awhile I e-mailed asking the status - no reply. The Deadroom did arrive eventually. No documentation. No instructions. No Thanks for purchasing! The pre-drilled holes did not match the Eminence (Splawn) speaker I had given instructions to drill for. So I sent an e-mail asking about this, and asking for more guidance as to how to set up, get best results, etc. I'm still waiting about two weeks for a reply, which I don't think I'll get.
That said, the unit arrived as described as is well built. I'm still trying to figure out how to get optimum tone out of the mikes inside without getting a boxy sound.

i have owned a 5 different splawns in the last 4 years, so i new how they sounded on record. i love the tone and grew very accustomed to it. after hearing about the randal iso cab and then the grendel, i decided to make my own so i could record at home. by the time it i had finished it, i had sold my two splawns and was waiting for another one from ebay, so all i had were a diezel einstein, boogie triple rec, and a h&k warp t that my friend let me borrow so i could hear the worst sounding tube amp in history ...... anyway ... i tried recording all of those with a old vintage 30 and a 57. i couldn't get anything that was near listenable except by the boogie. i bought a Sennheiser e906 (upgraded e609) because i read reviews that said that it was the only mic that sounded good in an iso cab. i retried everything, and again nothing was good enough. when i finally got my 4th splawn, i finally achieved the tone i needed. here is my setup .....
iso cab made from 11 ply furniture grade birch - $50 celestion vintage 30 (pre chinese) - $70 Sennheiser e906 - $150
total cost ---- $290 (with foam)
the amps i run are
splawn promod (2004) splawn superstock (2008)
quick note on how to get rid of the boxy sound, just buy bedding foam from walmart. it's like $20 and does just as well as auralex studio foam. after i foamed it out, it was ultra dry, took some of the foam out because it was soooo dry. anyway my recording tone is just as good as i ever got from a 4x12 cab. i designed it myself. it was ultra easy. if anyone wants a schematic, i could send it to you. if you want to hear it in action, go to myspace.com/superninjasupreme the profile song was recorded with ....

You can go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmkEJDD-3lE I was recording a scratch rhythm track using my Nitro and a Randall ISO cab. It isn't hard to get rid of the boxy sound. Put dynamat in the top along with some type of acoustical foam on top of it. I use a E609 and get great tones. I also use a SM57, but the 609 has a better recorded tone to me.
