yes. constantly running the amp at half power will wear the tubes unevenly. it also doesn't make the amp much quieter, really. i have a thd hot plate and it does a good job bringing the volume down with decent tone. the treble and bass boost switches are very helpful. of course, if you're really cranking the master volume you're going to wear the tubes out faster as well.

there is only a 3db difference in full to half power. also there is a significant amount of frequency loss with half power. it rolls of the bottom and top end a bit. it results in a thicker sound at lower volumes. a hot plate or any other attenuator will really mess with your tone. one thing that people usually don't take into consideration is how much of your tone comes from driving your speakers. that being said, it's almost impossible to get the real cranked sound without actually cranking the amp AND the speakers. for a thicker sound i would suggest running half power. i personally do this and i just take the 2 outside tubes out, run it at half power, and i have 2 brand new tubes for later. attenuators can destroy your transformer too. i wouldn't recommend using one EVER. it can back up the power similar to using a guitar cable for a speaker cable. they all claim to be safe, but is it really worth risking the baddest sounding amp on the planet ?

I run my Quick Rod on half power and use a volume pedal in the loop. I set the master volume control to about 9:30 or 10:00 and I get the best tone I have ever had. My tone is amazing now that I have a Splawn. I am in complete agreement about Splawn being the Baddest sounding amp on the planet.

Try this test Run at half power with all 4 tubes and listen. Notice the difference, then pull the outside 2 tubes. Again notice the difference, without the 2 tubes it loses a little something to my ears. Try it I just swap around tubes every so often. With all 4 tubes its a little thicker. But one day I just ran at full power and realized its not that much louder and it has more bottom end.... etc. So I never went back to half power. Just my .02 cents worth.

Scott. You want a great attenuator? Try Faustine Amplifiers they make the most natural sounding attenuator on the planet. Little pricey but well worth it. And if you bought a Splawn then your worried about tone as it is.
