Well boys, shes finally home in one piece!! FedEx was good to her. Not a single rip on the box! That alone is very surprising. I remember reading a comment on the forum a little while back stating that the packing done at Splawn HQ wasnt that great and something should get done to insure better protection from these truck drivers who don't give a sh!t about our gear... and I tend to agree a little. The thin sheets of foam used between the cab & box to protect it really won't do much if the box is dropped or worse... but then again something bigger will add to more weight and in turn more shipping fee's! But the most important thing is that she made it home in one piece ;D I'm really surprised at the build quality of this cab for the price its at. I havent had time to play her yet and I still need to break her in tomorrow... so for now, here are some pics! Enjoy!! Comparing it to the VHT built wise was pretty simple and honestly both come out as winners in my book. I couldnt pic one over the other because they both have different options that make them cool in there own way... For example, i really like the plain corners of the Splawn over the covered ones of the VHT But I also prefered the caster cups on the VHT that the Splawn didnt have... I don't know if Splawn offers this option, but to me its a must. And the fact that both use metal handles is another plus! I prefer the closed back look of the VHT but the added Speakon plug on the Splawn balances that out. The one thing that I really like about the VHT is the slight angle thats in the baffle over the flush front of the Splawn. It seems to me that the Splawn is a little heavier than the VHT and feels a little more sturdy... At the moment I am loving the Splawn... built wise, look wise and options available at purchase would make this my 1st pick between the Splawn & VHT. The extra custom work you can get says a lot about the company in my book. Next post, tone difference between both... I'll try and record the A/B'ing thing i'm doing saturday if I can. Either audio or video... if possible.

Splawn does an angled 4x12 too just like that VHT though, right? With the sloping baffle? At least they used to. Anyway cab looks great. Nice jam room.

Shreder, I went for an "X" of SB25's and BB's. And theres actually another Dean 7 string hidden behind the Splawn and theres another one on its way. A ltd run Dean Cadillac with Quilt top, rootbeer finish, OFR, V neck.... and it should be arriving in January Ayton, I checked out the Splawn site originally and I didn't see anything about the tilted baffle. It Could also be an extra option maybe ? Thx dude, the jam room is cool but I'm slowly running out of space there isn't much more gear that I'll be getting soon so I "think" i'm good for a while.

I have two further questions.
Do you have a house cleaner? I keep a lot of guitars in cases now, because I always go through periods of having one favorite while the others collect thick dust that I got tired of cleaning off. They look nice out but jeez. I should point out that I am very lazy.
And did you get stung for duty or import tax on the cab? If so was it bad?

I should point out that I am very lazy. And did you get stung for duty or import tax on the cab? If so was it bad? Well, heres the story... I met my wife when she was about 22 y/o and we've been together for 6 years now... more or less... that gave me a lot of time to train her properly. You know, her knowing her place... So when I see something needs cleaning I snap my fingers and she starts the polishing process... lol j/k btw!!! dont wanna piss off some sensitive readers I clean them up once a month or something like that... my guitars are all tuned differently so I always end up playing a different one for something. So yeah... i'd rather have to clean them once every two months then to have to pull out the cases each time and all that crap... in that sense, i'm lazy also. Cost of importing the cab wasn't bad dude... Scott charged me $225 for shipping and duty fee's. I think thats pretty fair. I pay almost the same when I order in a new Dean from Iowa.

Ok... so this week-end was the official "cab testing" between the Splawn, Marshall and VHT. Heres a pic of the cabs in question... I recently scored that 1960B cab for dirt cheap ($600 new in box) delivered to my house. I only took it because I thought the price was good and resale would be easy with a profit. Since i picked it I gave it the Bob Molton mod's and i've been jamming on it for a few weeks now, havent touched the VHT since the purchase of the 1960. So I got back into that "Marshall" sound again and thought it sounded decent and even thought of keeping it. The first thing we did Saturday was beer drinking and fired up the 5150 II amp with the Marshall cab. Sounded good, so we cranked that one out for about 20 minutes to get a feel for it. Then unplugged the 1960 and plugged in the VHT. I swear to you, I thought there was two 4x12's connected! it sounded bigger than life compared to the Marshall. The 1960 was very thin, lots of highs and it sounded weak. the VHT sounded fuller, heavy, lots of bottom end. There is no way I can go back to Marshall's only. You cant compare the tone of these 2 cabs. So guess what... the Marshall is being sold this week. Sorry Marshall fans... but the best way I can explain the tonal difference is this.... and i posted this example elsewhere also, imagine a V8 engine loaded with a cat back exaust system and a Honda Civic with a cherry bomb exaust. get my drift? The Splawn, After testing the VHT with the Marshall, the Marshall was pushed a side and we just concentrated on the Splawn and VHT. Man, the Splawn sounded damn great!! I can honestly compare this cab to the VHT in every way. Both cabs use custom Eminence speakers (i aint a fan of celestions). I found my choice of speakers in the Splawn to be crisp, had lots of bottom end, very tight response, the notes came out full and textured, very well-defined. In fact, i thought it sounded more "open" than the VHT. And it was tighter than the VHT. The VHT was a little darker and had more bottom end to it, now that I compare it to Splawn its a little "boomy". While "chuggin" away on some riffs I kicked into Metallica's 4horsemen and the VHT was a little more meaty while the Splawn had plenty of bottom end, it was a little crisper. You heard the notes better. When starting off Dokken's - Heaven Comes Down and Unchain the night both cabs pulled them off with flying colors but the Splawn had a little something extra... could it be the "X" factor ? Both these cabs are killer and worth every penny... But, as much as I love my VHT and will NEVER part with it, the Splawn had a better overall response. But again, both cut it very, very close and its really hard to one over the other. I'll be checking out for an SM57 this week (buy or rental) and I'll try to compare clips on both.
