Hello I am Andrea from italy again. Iplay a Competition Head KT66 equipped. Now I noticed from the Splawn website that KT66 are not installed anymore on Splwn amps, now the option is KT88 or EL34. Please would someone let me know how EL 34 wwill affect the sound of my Comp Head? Thanks a lot, Andrea.

I really don't know. I am not a tube/mod/customizing expert. I play stock instruments. on the box of the tubes supplied with the amp is written JJ KT ...something (box are scratched and I can't read because the tape were there and while unpackaging the aprt of the tubes box was taken away by the tape). Maybe KT77 or KT88 I don't know. But anyway wich id the difference between different tubes? EL34-KT something - 6L6 and so on.....??Thanks a lot.

Wow man i've never heared of a Splawn with KT66's aren't those like 6l6's but more marshally? Not more Marshally per se - that'll depend on the amp design the tube is in, but absolutely a lot THICKER tone - like the difference between yogurt and custard. A lot of folks always reference the "Beano" album for the Bluesbreaker/KT66 tones. Really big, thick tones. They can make a guitar take up a LOT of sonic space. Great tube for a guitar/bass/drum band. Seems the KT77/88 have a similar character in that regard to comparable tubes. I just sold my KT-66 based amp - sounded great with the tubes originally in it and then the tooling was stolen so GT couldn't make them any more. Hard to find anything that sounded/felt nearly as good. Some were even harmful to the amps. Just a mess. If mfg's get the tooling/production quality/consistency constant across the board (all makers) I'll pick up another KT-66 based amp. The one I sold was likely the "Perfect" guitar tone - but cost too much to keep running and didn't sound as good (as noted earlier).

Don't even bother with the EL34's, the KT88's made my nitro sound ten times bigger. The KT77's sound no better than any other EL34 (as far as that question goes)... actually, the ruby EL34B-STR's have a bigger sound than the KT77's do.
