ok, I know it's not really a quick rod topic, but this forum gets the most traffic =D
I have someone willing to sell me a rio grande bbq/texas set for $140...no lead has been trimmed..they're essentially brand new...
I don't really like the dimarzio evolution that my buddy just put into my JP6 for me..
while I don't necisarily wanna put a JB in the ebmm, I want something similar, ya know? something open, and punchy..that handles legato and hammerons and pull offs well..with killer harmonics..nice and chunky..around the same output as the JB if possible...

Hey man, Mark here. I have a BBQ in my main guitar, an '86 Jackson with a poplar body,so maybe I can give you some insight since I've also had a JB in there. At least my take on it. I seem to use a little less gain than alot of you guys, I usually run 2nd gear OD1and gain at about 10 oclock for rhythms, more for solos, and I generally avoid real high power pickups because I like the amp to do the work.
First off, the BBQ seems to be not quite the output of a JB but it's close, it's still a nice strong healthy output, definately more than vintage, and more than the Screamin Demon I have too. FWIW, the JB doesn't "sound" high output to me, but a Tone Zone does, just for comparison. The tone is very very even, I don't hear any real bumps which may be good or bad for you. I guess I'd call it balanced, I dont hear anything that makes me reach for the amp eq immediately. It doesn't have the hi mid accentuation that the JB has, but it has plenty for the amp to work with if you want more of that. Again, I prefer to dial that stuff in on my amp, I hate having to try to tame mids and highs on the amp because then it seems to make the amp sound "choked". That Screamin Demon by comparison just had too much high end happening right out of the guitar.
I will say that on the clean channel of my QR, the BBQ does overdrive it a bit when used alone, so that tells me it's definately got some extra oooomph. I rarely use just the bridge pickup for clean tones anyway, but I know alot of people do for that Queensryche type of clean tone.
Harmonics are a breeze, and the BBQ is super articulate. For solos, it seems like there's not a harsh note to be found, it sounds good everywhere even way up high.
And what really sends me, I'm a junkie for being able to roll off the guitar volume and get a clean tone (like VH did so often), and the BBQ is by far the best I've ever played at doing that, even moreso than lower output pickups that have alot of high end (like the Demon). In my experience, that ability goes away as you increase power and/or decrease high end, but for some reason I can use the BBQ with the volume knob right down at 2 or 3 and it's still got good high end albeit clean, it's awesome.
Anyway, hope that helps. What don't you like about the Evolution?

My opinion is theres no comparison. I took Scott's recommendation all the way down the line,, Splawn/Mansel Commando wth the BBQ/Texas set, Quick Rod and Cab with Eminence speakers. This sounds awesome to me. I've only recorded one clip with this pickup combo and its not on the site cause I never finished it, but here it is for reference. hair-metal.com/tunes/aede.mp3

hey dude..some valuable insight here..cause I've had a demon AND a JB and I've noticed that from a resistance standpoint, the bbq is right between the jb and the demon.. i didn't like the demon at all..like you said, it was wayyy too harsh for me..and I didn't like that it didn't have enough oomph.... what I like about the JB is that while it's relatively hot (I don't think it's at hot as the tone zone, fyi), it's nice and open (to my ears anyway)...and it's also even.. what people have said is that it's like a less harsh version of the JB..in that it doesn't have the high mid peak that the jb tends to have...which I don't mind..I love the sound of my JB in my esp, but while I want somethign similar, I'm not looking for the exact same sound....it's more of a feel or an attack issue..which it seesm like the BBQ will be right on for me and my petrucci... the evolution...welp, the low end is kinda flubby..and it just sounds nasally, honky and compressed....it's ceramic magnet so I shoulda friggin' known better... I emailed scott (cause he actually emailed ME saying that he heard I was lookin' for RG's..lol...what a guy) and after askin' him some questions told him to send me a black f spaced 4 conductor bbq.. one day I'll swap out the neck pickup, but it suits me pretty well right now and it sounds good in split coil..so I'll keep it..I usually don't use the neck pickup that much anyway, so I'm gonna just wiat and save the money... I think it's going to boil down to trying it, like most pickups do. I know you thought the stock pickups on your Axis were too weak, and I a/b'd my Axis and my Jackson and it sounds like the BBQ is a tad down on drive as compared to the Axis. The sounds quality was definately there, I just noticed that with the Axis it sounded like I had the gain turned up a notch. Not much, but it was noticable.
Shoot, the QR has so much gain that I want to try like a Duncan 59 just for kicks. But then again, I don't know I'm interested in ditching the BBQ, it's a keeper.

I'm just not a dimarzio fan as you can tell...LOL...one of hte reasons why I went with the evo was cause it would look right and I thought it would sound ok and I knew it would fit.. but I don't care about that anymore....lol...I've had three dimarzios and didn't like any of them...except for the neck pup in my petrucci..I think I'll keep that for awhile..

Dude... I see you everywhere! EBMM Forums, Harmony Central, I'm even right below you on the EBMM Forumites map!
You don't like the EVO in your JP6? I was actually one of the guys who gave you that advice to put it in on the EBMM forums. Sounds like you've been used to your Lynch with the JB in it for quite a while. I think the only way you'll be happy is to put one of those in there. Don't be afraid!
But I know what you mean. I don't even play my JP at all, and I think it's because of the pickups. If you like the Rio Grandes, let me know, because I might throw a set in my JP6, too! Seriously!
I was really getting the feeling you wanted to go with something really gainy. That's the EVO; it is nasally, though.
You might wanna try a Tone Zone, Air Norton combo, I've really been thinking about going this route. But I definitely agree about switching out the stock pickups in the JP. Hell, JP himself
A: puts a different pickup in the bridge now
B: is going to be revamping his sig model, probably with a new pickup choice

I really love the JB, the attack friggin' rocks and the harmonics are insane for the most part..but I think I'd like some tamer high mids in my number two axe, ya know? I just think I'm t hrough with dimarzios...tried three, haven't liked a single one...

I used to be a big JB fan, used them for years. However, upon Scott's reco I tried a BBQ. I was stunned at the difference. After hearing the BBQ, the JB sounded muddy. I couldn't believe it... after much thought and agonizing, I'm going with the texas bbq set =D four conductor on the neck, two conductor on the bridge this way I can coil tap the neck pickup and get a realllllly stratty type tone...I only have a three selector switch (which I like actually)....so it'll be bridge pup, coil tapped neck, full neck in that order =D I used to be a big JB fan, used them for years. I used to not be a fan of dimarzio's either, especially after the pups in the EBMM. But I LOVE the pups in my JEM, the PAF Pros. And it's basswood as well.
Let me know how it works out, I would not hesitate to throw something else in there too.
And yeah, I go by this same name pretty much everywhere.

Not bad at all. I'm in Jax, which is up north, so we didn't really get much of anything. But I actually just got in touch last night with some friends of mine in Ft Lauderdale, and they got it really rough. Part of their roof is off of their house. Yngwie cancelled his show there, but he's playing up here tonight!
