Here are my settings: Res: 11 O'clock Presence: 12 o'clock Bass: between 9 and 10 O'clock Mids: between 12 and 1 o'clock Treble: around 1 o'clock Gain: Between 12 and 1 O'clock
On OD2, I can do anything from Thrash metal, Heavy metal, death metal, you name it. Plenty of gain and tight aggressive tone. I am using a Splawn Cab with 2 MoW and 2 Govs. But soon will be replacing those with 4 Celestion 75s to see how they sound in there.
The Nitro is a very low, low/mid strong amp. I'd say turn down your Bass.

see, I'm off in left field with my settings... I actually sent scott an email asking him for as much details as he can provide about the resonance knob. It's so mysterious as I really can't pinpoint EXACTLY what it does to the sound spectrum.
What I told him it sounds like to me is a variable bold/spongy knob like you see the little switch on the mesas. As long as the bass knob is set accordingly, you can still get a very big thundering low end even with the resonance all the way off.
And what I noticed was that with the resonance all teh way off and the bass at like 3 o'clock, the low end is massive and extremely tight and percussive. Introducing the resonance knob just a hair will begin to sponge up the low end (regardless of where the bass knob is actually) so what I've found is that if I'm playing low gain rock that I want to sort of brown up a bit, I'll use more resonance and back the bass off and if I want a tighter heavier low end, I'll roll the resonance (usually off totally) and crank the bass.
With these settings
resonance - 0 bass - 3 o'clock mids - 2 o'clock presence - 2 o'clock trebel - 3 o'clock gain - 3 o'clock volume - as loud as you can tolerate
Give an absolutely devastating metal tone that I haven't gotten a chance to record yet.
Originally I had discredited the avatar open back cab as mushy and flabby an just ill-suited for the nitro's low end thunder but dropping the resonance really give the cab it's composure back at stage volumes and high gain.
I think the tigher the cab/speakers you have the more that resonance knob will be able to be raised without straying from the super tight brootalz low end.
now, if you're wanting a more traditional browner spongier marshall sound, by all means, crank the snot out of that resonance knob. Just make sure you use the bass and midrange knob to ensure it doesn't get too sloppy.
OD2 will offer a slightly more high gain signal but more importantly, more low end fatness so if the low end is too sloppy even with careful resonance knob and bass knob manipulation, try using a clean boost on OD1. I've discovered that using OD 2 with very low gain and quite a bit of midrange and resonance can give a nice thick singing classic rock and blues tone and not be over the top with the quantity of gain.
