hey guys, I have my Nitro running at 1/2 power by using the toggle switch on the back. All the power tubes are still inside the amp. I understand that only the middle 2 tubes are used in 1/2 power mode.
Also, I am running the Nitro head at 16ohms and Splawn cabinet at 16ohms.
My question is.. when running at 1/2 power, do I need to switch the impedance to 1/2 (8ohms) of what the cabinet is at (16ohms) even if all the power tubes are still inside? or it doesnt matter?
Any info would help
Thanks

Thanks! What would happen if I dont do that? cause I've been using it like that for a while.

You could be harming your amp if you've been doing that for a while, try talking to Scott about it.

No it'll be fine. If you set your amp at 4 ohms, then you'd be asking for trouble. Running the amp at a higher impedance is fine but won't be as powerful.
I've run both my carvins for years at 50 watts with a matching impedence that the cab has with zero problems.

IMO, you're asking for trouble mismatching in either direction. It says in the manual, that when you are in half power mode, you use the impedance setting that is half of what your actual cab impedance is.
By taking 2 tubes out of the circuit, you are doubling the impedance on that side of impedance matching output transformer. Now the 4ohm tap is really trying to match 8ohm, 8ohm tap is trying to match 16ohm, etc. Mismatching in either direction will decrease your power with an impedance matching output transformer used in tube amps.

So basicly when I run in 1/2 power, I should put my Nitro on 8ohms since the cabinet is 16ohms. correct?

yes, in 1/2 power mode, you need to also half the ohm setting on the amp. so set the amp to 8ohms if you're plugging into a 16ohm cab in 50 watt mode.
fastredponycar, i would NOT recommend running the amp with the mismatched impedances like that, ESPESCIALLY not with the amp set higher than than the load. you will fry your OT. it's always best to match the impedances.

Thanks guys! last night before rehearsal I switched the impedance to 8ohms on the head, kept it at half power going into a Splawn 16ohms cab.
I'll keep it that way for now. If i run it into full mode then I'll switch it back.
Thanks alot guys.
Cheers

But for sure I can tell you that the amp sounded more "healthy".. it almost responded even better. it wasnt as bassy and didnt sound "chocked". of course it'll be different from one person's ear to another. But thats how I can sorta explain it best.
