I ordered my head w/ kt77s and it was cool but I was never totally stocked it was missing girth, punch for me, maybe the 77s were bad from the start but they finally died, called and talk to josh at splawn,Great guy, very helpful, told him I want a godsmack tone, he suggested mullard el34 and tungsol 12ax7 got em from Dougs tubes, put em in and Holy Heavenly Brutal Tone,Now this amp is alive,Now this amp responds,Now I can even hear the difference between od1 and od2.I am just so excited and overall completely happy about this amp.
The Splawn has Risen !!!

How did the Tung-sols change the sound in the pre-amp? (arent the stock pre-amp tubes JJ's?)Ive heard that the tung-sol's tubes have a brighter sound that a typical pre-amp tube. Were they the high gain ones?

I had stock JJs in it 12ax7 and jj kt77s.... did not like them.. the tung sol 12ax7 is just a reg 12ax7, all I know is the combination sounds fantastic... like godsmack, tone very dark, more saturation than the 77s,has that big ol narly growl to it,Like a marshall pushin nitrous oxide! Man I struggled with this amp since I got it I like its sig sound but it was missin something for me, Now the gain knob seams to have way more to it,and od1 and 2 there is an audible diff, which before to me thee wasnt. I really thought of sellin it until now, now it has what I was hopin,I sold my Marshall jvm, because it was Lacking big time.My Marshall DSL 50, is cool, but to me Splawn has this unique sound to them,I really dont know how to explain it... but they do.

Glad to hear good things about the Mullard EL34/Tung Sol 12AX7 combo. Just got the same set of tubes in the mail and plan to install and bias tonight.

i'm rocking a tung sol 12AX7 in V3 (what I assume to be resposible for OD2) and it's a great deal clearer than the JJs'. Not quite as dark as the EHX and punchier than the NOS mullard and RCA 12ax7's.

Well, I have the Mullards in and biased. We played a show last night and they just wouldn't cut through. The Mullards are a great sounding tube but don't have the cut that the 77's did. The set I have are matched but when I biased I got 32.5, 24.4, 23.3, 28.0 so maby that has something to do with it. The amp seemed to lose it's tightness a bit also. I will try to get a better matched set but I will prder a new set of KT77's and a set of the Tung Sol EL34B just to compare them all.

The quads I got from Doug's biased up fine. The JJKT77's and JJKT88's sound really good in my Nitro's and both cut through no problem at all. I can honestly say that I have the best tone I have ever had and I am getting lot's of compliments now that I have gone all Splawn.

I bought the mullards from Splawn but I think the bias range is normal. I told Josh about the loss of tone and lack of cut. The first thing he mentioned was power problem and I immediately recalled the sound guy having problems with the venue's electricity. I will definately give the Mullards another gig before I make any changes. However, I do enjoy trying different tubes since I bought the Bias Rite so I will get a new set of KT77's and a set of Tung Sol EL34B just to experiment. The only issue I had with the JJ KT77's was that they were a bit grainy sounding but I think they were microphonic and set cold from the beginning. My friend has a KT88 nitro and it crushes. Maby I'll tell Josh to send my new Nitro with KT88's.

I've saved my butt a few times at venues that had less than desirable power levels or were running too many things from one outlet.

Yeah, I'm gonna get one soon. Those things are pricey though, $650.00 for the Furman power conditioner/voltage regulator. But then again, it can save the amps life. We have booked too many gigs without making sure there is plenty of power. I generally ask for a seperate outlet for my amp and then people think I'm being picky about ny equipment.
