Thanks bro. I stopped having Birthdays 12 years ago heh heh. I'm still 25! Well I at least still feel like I'm 25. 37 isn't so bad. It's just very close to 40. Eeeeeek! I'm glad you like the Shuguangs. I'm liking the EL34B's more evertime I play through them. I think they have burned or broken in now. Very smooth and punchy. I think they have more mids than the KT77's. I compared a couple of short recordings I did with each and the EL34's seem to have more presence or cut to them. Both very tight with good thump. I think the 34's also sound a tad meaner. One day I will finally have a full track to post for ya. I do everything live, so my recoding sessions tend to run quite long especially with me forgetting or messing up drum parts. One man band stuff sux, but is a good challenge. I haven't mastered the heal toe technique on the double kick, so my 16th note runs are still a little sketchy.

cool dude. i have some Ruby EL34B-STRs (re-labled Shuguang EL-34B's) coming in today. Hopefully I'll have some time to try them out. i'm pretty excited. i also have some Tung-sol EL34B's (what splawn is using now) coming in at the end of the week. should be a pretty interesting comparison b/t the two.

I haven't used Tung-sol power tubes. Only preamps. I liked the Tung-sols in the clean module in my Randall Rm100. Those Rubys should sound sweet.

Yup. I think Scott should start putting Ruby or Shugs in them at the shop. My amp sounds brutal with the shugs. I think they needed some burn or break in time. Now it absolutely slams. it was borderline woofy-farty with the KT77's, so the resonance had to be up pretty high to tighten it up. Now I have the resonance at about 10 O'clock and it is as tight as shoving a watermelon through a keyhole. With the deep Nitro growl of course. I think it has a similar feel of the quickrod I had with the Nitro voice. I think it has a tad less sag, but more sack and cut. It is waaaaaaaaaaaay more pleasant to record fo sho.

Hey guys, the Shuguang tubes are what the elmwood modena 60 amps have in them for power-el-34's and pre-amp spots. Except for the phase inverter position and that's a Sovtek 12ax7wxa. These tubes are very musical. The 34's look alot like the SED'S with a slightly fatter glass bottle, just slightly.

Interesting to know. I'm not familiar with Elwood amps. I'm curious how Shugs will sound in a quick rod.

got the ruby's today and put them in. wow!!! i really think we have a winner here. going to try to give the amp a run later tonight. i will keep you guys updated. The BSTR's are hands down THE best *Current production* EL34's on the planet. I've tested about 7 different pairs of EL34's in my dual 50 watt power amp with a mesa boogie studio preamp and the ruby's just tore up every other pair of tubes. JJ's EL34R's JJ's KT77's =C= EL34's EHX EL34's Groove Tube EL34R's Mesa branded EL34's (probably sovteks) ReIssue Mullard EL34's. All of those listed had under a month of light use. The rubys had a bigger bolder tighter low end with more clarity and definition, the midrange was thick and smooth without being over bearing and the high end was very clear and glassy. I found it funny how with every other pair I tried, I had to raise that channel's volume up a few clicks on their channel's volume knob to equal the decible output the ruby's channel had. Every single pair had a lower volume output and less overall clarity in note structure, especially once I raised the power amp channel all the way.

Where are you guys getting the Tung-sols and the ruby tubes from? What ratings?

I got my Shugs (Ruby rebrands them) on Ebay. I also have a set I got from the tubestore. Mine are rated at 37 and the tube store set are 39. I think the higher rate tubes have a clearer sound and later break up. I think Groove Tubes sell a rebranded Shuguang EL34B also. Their tubes are rated on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being the ones with the most head room or latest break up I think.
