I am looking for crushing tone..sort of like Zakk Wylde vs. Brad Noah of Disciple. Which head to get? I hate distortion pedals and would rather get my gain from the head.
OR
Should I get a Marshall and have it modded?
Thanks! Chris

Hi,
I am no longer a splawn owner but I owned a QR for a few weeks. It has massive amounts of built in overdrive. Actually to much @ louder volumes but you can always back off. Both the QR and PM are the same circuit, just different power tubes. You should be fine with either one as far as overdrive.

Of course, that has changed with the 3rd gear thing. I guess you can get even more with it! Of course, for my tastes I would probably stick with the current sounds. Scott said you can get even cleaner distortion with it to.

I hope Scott isn't beginning a pattern of ever more complex designs with more and more bells and whistles thinking that in the end complexity=progress...because one need only look at Randall Smith and the Road King to see just how absurd things can become....Marshall went through the same kind of thing in the 90's with the anniversary model. If they only new then what they know now we could have had the hand-wired series in the 90's! The simpler the amp the purer the tone!

Been thinking about this question javashred.. and I have had the pleasure to meet Nick Catanese several times when he is back in Pittsburgh after touring with BLS. Zakk and Nick both are using stock JCM800's... yes.. your heard me.. STOCK.. and they do not have nearly as much gain as modern amps.. but keep in mind.. they both use the boss Sd-1 or ZW-44 now.. togehter with the active EMG pickups.. so to achieve the huge sound.. they are putting lots of overdrive into the front end.. and the result.. is very noisy.. Plus the big sound they get is also do to the high headroom 6550's (Kt-88's) they use in the amp. Nick has told me.. the noise is hard to to handle.. (ie. always playing with the volume pot..) and Nick always turns off the OD pedal between songs.. on on quiet passages.. (even they don't have many of those..).. Best bet may be to use the PM with KT-88's and see if the 3rd gear can be had on that one..!! Could get that huge sound without an OD pedal perhaps..
