what's up, gain freaks? In all likelihood, I'll be a splawn owner in the upcomming month or so (hopefully weeks) and I just thought I'd pop my head in and say hi =)
All the clips Ive heard of these puppies are great and they've gone from blues, to early VH, to even higher gain than that...
funny thing...I've liked alotta marshal guitar tones over the years (van halen, Dokken--I'm a lynch nut, Jake E Lee, etc, etc), but I've never actually played through a marshall that didn't sound like crap to me....
i'm in a cover band, but I play alot at home at bedroom volumes..and marshalls don't get squat for gain at those levels...
I haven't played through one yet, but I might get a chance to do so in a couple of weeks..even so, I might just buy one, sound unheard and take a leap of faith =) I've been jonesin' for one for quite a while...
I was kinda wondering which one to get for awhile (judging by clips only, mind you)..the pro mod or the quick rod...and the pro mod's touted as 'more modern' sounding...but ya know what? I don't think I want that modern, nu metal type of tone..not to say that the pro mod only does that...I'm not sayin' I wanna cop EVH either, but I love that brown sound..the saturation, the harmonics, the richness of it...being able to palm mute lead runs and not have it fart out, etc, etc...
I was thinking of going the engl route, but even though I'm a metal head, I don't play with Soilwork or Killswitch Engage type of tone (weird eh?)...most of the engl clips I've heard are all really newish sounding, or deathmetal...
I haven't heard a bad thing about the QR, or any splawn amp for that matter, and I think a QR will be right up my alley =)
anywho, as a potential owner, i just thought I'd join yer little circle of friends here!

if you're a fan of all the guys you listed (as am I), you won't be dissapointed with the QR...
there's tricks you can do to run the amp HOT but still have it at bedroom volume levels...

hey man...thanks for the reply =)
what tricks would those be?
oh, another guy that I'm a fan of, and possibly my favorite post 80's guitar tone was Nuno Bettencourt's tone on Pornografitti...
think the QR is capable of that kinda tone as well? that's really brown, but just thicker and ballsier

That Alesis trick works great. And it sounds huge when cranked up loud too!
I plug into the low input.50 watt mode. preamp gain on 3.5 - 4 Master on 4 presence bass mid treble all at 12:00 straight up
Adjust Alesis output to taste and it is the best brown tone ever!!!! Ballsy, chunky tone ...I love it!!!!!

cool trick =)
very pleased to hear that it can do the nuno tune...the other guitar player in my band never heard extreme before...he's also an amateur sound engineer..has a studio in his basement..anywho, I showed him nuno's tone on pornografitti and he couldn't get over how fat it sounded while staying tight at the same time =)
I know this question has probably been asked a gillion times, but let's say ya don't have the midverb...will it still sound good at low volumes in the bedroom? I'm sure it won't sound as good as if you have it cranked for a gig or recording, but I'm just curious =)
back to the midiverb/trick..does the fx loop have adjustable send/receive volumes? could probably do it like that to, no?

If I understand you correctly, yes the Alesis is in the effects loop.
FX Loop "The Splawn Series Effects Loop features a true bypass switch that takes the loop completely out of the circuit, thus ensuring the original tone isn't compromised. The Level Switch allows you match the loop to either stompboxes or rack units."
The amp will still sound great at low volume, although I bet you will make some adjustments. But a great tone , none the less.
But IMO the Splawns are made to crank, just like a good Marshall.I think their true potentional lies in moving air.

AXE-- yeah, I'm sure most good tube amps sound better at high volumes, but gotta preserve the ears what kinda cabinets are you guys using? I'm assuming splawn of course..lol...2x12 or 4x12? I'm having a bit of a problem..I really dig 4x12 cabs, but since I'm in a band and I only have a car, I don't want to have to lug something so big around... anywho, I have a genz benz g flex, 2x12...sounds pretty good when I'm sitting in front of it on the floor....but when I stand or sit in my computer chair, it gets wayyy too boomy and it farts out...loses all articulation, focus, tightness, responsivness (insert adjective here) when I was playin' through 4x12, back in the day, the sound would change a little bit depending on where you moved in the room, but it wouldn't sound like a TOTALLY different amp, which is the problem I'm seeming to have now... is it my cabinet ya think? do the splawn 2x12 have the same problem? this is more of a practice thing than anything else..when I play live, I only use one mic on the cab, so having a 4x12 is overkill I think..but when playing in my room, I want it to sound good! lol thanks

uhmmmm...my vote is if you're going to be playing at home and you have room for a 4X12...then use a 4X12...i have a splawn 4X12 in my room but gig with an old mesa half closed back 4x12 because it's a little lighter...at our practice room there's marshall 4X12s...although i love my splawn 4X12, i don't notice much difference when i play through the other ones...
i had a genz benz gflex 2X12 and know what you mean about that...

so it's NOT just me then...dude, you have no idea how happy I am to hear that I'm not going crazy =) carting around a 4x12 is going to be a pain in the ass when we starting gigging regularly though =( so I have a decision to make..I guess I could start swapping cars with my wife (she's got an suv, i have a maxima) if it comes to that...
not sure...oh yeah, then there's the money aspect..lol..but if I sell the gflex, the splawn wouldn't put me out that much..

i don't think a 4x12s that hard to carry around to gigs...i mean...i have a saab sedan and the 4x12 fits in the trunk with room to spare...it depends on your car obviously though

I'm using 2 Marshall 4-12's.I'm from the old school I guess.
The only reason I use 2 is the Splawn only has 2 outputs!!LOL..... ;D
No , it actually sounds great cause I'm moving alot of air, even at lower volume. One cab has vintage 30's and the other has GT-12 75's.I'm thinking of doing the X pattern in both cabs,i.e. 2 V30's and 2 G1275's in each.
I think that a 2x12 will sound just about as good.

yeah, I was on the cabinet forum and there's alotta good talk about the 2x12..the dealer in my area is getting a QR and a 2x12 in a couple of weeks...he's going to let me know when they come in so I can drive up there and try them out...I'm sure it'll sound killer, but I haven't had much luck with buying stuff without having played it first =)
