What is 3rd gear? Is it more gain than OD2 with the pre-amp on 10?

What is 3rd gear? Is it more gain than OD2 with the pre-amp on 10? yeah i believe so...here's what i got from scott: Hey Jim! Don't kill me man but I am going to send you some t-shirts, refresh me on the size again. The mode switch is something that came to me while I was on vacation. I had redesigned the low input on the newer models which really gives the amp that modded plexi vibe. A little more high end bite, little less gain and lows. I really dig this sound. So I decided to only have one input and put this feature on a switch. So now you have that sound which is called 1st gear, the stock sound which was the hi input now called 2nd gear and a new higher gain which is called 3rd gear. You still have OD1 and OD2 footswichable capabilities in all 3 modes, however the mode switch is not footswitchable.

3rd gear sounds a lot like 2nd gear, only with a touch more gain and a little more low end. Kinda like 2nd gear, only more of it. Since I grew up on a Mesa Boogie, I crave low end and 1st gear doesn't have it for me. I like the lower gain of 1st gear but need more bottom. If you have an older QR with the high and low inputs, the high input is the same as 2nd gear. 3rd gear gets even more bottom, but has a little too much gain for me. I don't know that it is worth getting the 3rd gear put on an older QR unless you need more bottom. I use 2nd gear.

Yeah man, more gain as an option would be cool. So can anyone 100% confirm that the 3rd gear is an extra gain stage?

I guess I could call Scott,, but what I really want to know is, does it have more gain on 3rd gear than the highest setting on the old QR's.

The answer is yes. It has more gain AND bottom end fairly but it's subtle. I don't think it's an added gain stage but I could be wrong. It's not quite as big of a change as switching from 1st gear to 2nd gear (or in your case going from the low to the high input) but you can hear it for sure. Are you guys using the high input with the gain all the way up?
