Hey, this is my first post on this forum, but I post on many others. I need some help here. I am getting a new amp next week, and I found one of these on craigslist for $950. I was planning on getting a Dr. Z Maz Jr. redhead for $1000 from someone until I saw this. I play, basically, anything from worship music to metal, so I need a versatile amp. I need some opinions. Thanks.

At 950, if it's in reasonable shape, buy it, because that is a steal. You'll learn more from the first minute you switch it on than we could all type out here about how good it is. You don't like the voicing, or it's too loud, you can flip it for 11 or 12.
Won't you need a clean channel for worship?

Yeah, that was another thing. At my church we play mostly contemporary (hillsong, david crowder, michael gungor, etc.) so I usually don't use a completely clean sound. My cleanest sound that I use is my Super Reverb and a fulldrive with the drive at 11:00. How clean can the Competition get?

The Comp can't get very clean only "marshall clean".

I need something like a vox with volume at 2:00 amount of gain. Can this get like that?

uh...no. In my opinion the competition is good for one thing: Bust'in Heads!!! Mine has KT-77s in it and hard rock to metal is its forte'. If you need a clean amp, buy something that would better suit your needs because if you play this amp in church (the way it's meant to be played) you'll end up getting ex-communicated or exsorcised or something along those lines. If you don't end up buying that competition, let me know where you saw that add...I would love to have another one!!!

yeah, man..if you're looking for something super clean like a fender or something with a vox like gain voicing, you should be looking elsewhere...cause the splawn stuff definetly is not like either of thsoe amps

Alright, well I'll probably go with the Dr. Z for now, but I will definitely look back at these in the future when I have more money to get another head. How do you guys compare these with a mesa rectifier. I used to have one when all I played was metal, but it seemed like it got to furry and unclear when I did fast picking on the lower stings. I also didn't like the sound when sweep picking, but I hear a lot of people use a tubescreamer on top of Ch3 for that. Here is the ad where I saw the Competition. So far the guy is taking forever to respond to my emails and get me a picture, but good luck if you go for it. kansascity.craigslist.org/msg/638218625.html

Hey man thanks. I just sold my recto if that tells you anything. The splawn has so much more clarity and articulation; no furry, buzzy sound like the recto. And it has plenty of bottom-end, so I would definitly check one out when you can. You know, the Quick Rod has a clean channel. Maybe the other guys on the forum can chime in with their opinions on whether or not you could attain the type of clean your looking for and you would have the kick butt overdrive on channel 2 as well. You can often find killer deals on used QRs too.

Go for the Dr.Z with some pedals - you'll be much happier. Especially if you're looking at a Maz Jr/Sr. The Jr can get into the 18 watt Marshall tones but still do a great clean. Set it about 1:00 for a light clip - roll the guitar volume back for great clean, kick in a drive or boost to change/add more drive.
I've had 5 or 6 Zs (including the Jr/Sr - still have 2 Zs at the moment). The Splawn amps sound much better being pushed a bit. The Triode setting of the Competition is great for quieter situations - can still get the tubes working and all the tone without blowing everyone away. Not as much "meat" (i.e. body/lowend/power) but all the tone. Even w/the Triode setting I think it would be too loud...if you run the output level too low the amp can be a touch harsh/brittle/stiff...they need those power tubes a-cookin! The 50 watt Pentode setting is killer w/the volume up. I really don't like the Marshall 1960A cabs but they do sound wonderful being slammed full-on by a "Marshall" flavored amp. Seriously yummy tones....hmmm....

I canned my rectoverb shortly after I got the quickrod. To nu-metal for my tastes anymore.
