How much difference is there between the Pro Mod and Quick Rod gain wise?
Judging from the clips I am digging the QR , but I want to make sure I get the right amp.I would rather have more gain on tap if needed than to have to crank the gain on 10 and then use a box.
I play everything from Van Halen to Hendrix/Trower...Metal ala Priest/Scorpions/Accept/Dio etc... and I occasionally dabble into old school Speed Metal/Thrash hehehehehehehe....
Also,is the OD 2 adjustable? I have a Laney GH50L with a Drive Boost(seperate from preamp gain)which is adjustable and that is a great thing!
Any and all info will be greatly appreciated....

Hi,
The only difference between the amps is the Power tubes and transformer. The QR has EL 34's and the PM has the KT88's. I talked to scott about it and he said the pro-mod is a slightly more modern sounding and the quick rod is a little more vintage sounding. He said the difference was fairly subtle but there is a difference. As far as the gain goes I am guessing it would be the same being the circuit is the same. The OD 2 is a little hotter then the standard OD. The pre-amp control adds gain to both the OD1 and OD2. The boost seems to add some gain as well but its more of a volume boost. Its not a super high gain amp but it gets vert crunchy even with the gain all the way up it still retains good clarity. It never really gets mushy or fuzzy sounding. If you decide to go for a Pro mod there were a few on ebay last week that never sold. They were priced great. I was surprised they didn't sell.

Thanks for the reply.
What are the different trannys?
And couldn't you put EL34's in the Pro Mod?
The clips that Scott Splawn did on the PM and the QR sound awesome. I think they are very , very similar. I wouldn't know unless I got to A/B them hands on.
Decisions...decisions.........

Hi,
The pro-mod comes with the mercury magnetics trany and the Quick rod accomodates the Heyboer trany. Scott says the EL 34's don't work as well wit the mercury trany. Who knows though. I would guess they sound close enough to where it would be really hard to tell the difference. I bought my QR on ebay a few weeks ago which was virtually new. I don't think the pro-mod is worth the money difference in the price. If you are looking to pick up a used one you may get a better deal on a pro-mod. I like the look of the older QR which is what I got. It looks like the old plexi marshalls. I don't care for the fence look of the pro-mod. JMO.... Personally I would buy one used if you find one you want.

I am wondering what settings everybody uses on their PM or QR ? Especially the preamp setting.
I like the way it tells you what amp and guitar is used on some of the soundclips. But what are the gain settings?etc....? I am wondering if everybody has their preamp gain slammed or what?

Dude,
After playing around with my quick rod over the last week I find that being you have 2 different overdrives which sound basically the same other then hot and hotter and the pre-amp control which adjusts the amount of gain for either one you can use different settings and dial in pretty much the same sounds by just resetting the preamp control. Does that make any sense to you?? If you like a little more breakup I would use OD2 with the gain about halfway which works for me. If you want more of an AC/DC sound use OD1 and adjust the pre amp accordingly. The amp seems to have the same tone no matter how you set it. Its just a matter of tweeking it to your liking. BTW there is are 2 modded splawn marshalls on ebay right now.

I like the OD1 for just about everything with the gain around 1 oclock. When you hit the lead boost it goes to OD2 anyway, which adds more than enough gain.
At gigs I usually run the gain full-on but still play everything on OD1 and use the boost for solos.
I run the rest of the settings like this:
Presence: 1 oclock Bass: 4-5 oclock Mid: 1 oclock Treble: 12 oclock
If I need more "cut" depending on the room or stage I'll boost the mids, treble or presence without adjusting the volume first and it usually does the trick.

Thanks for the info guys, especially Dirrty Craig.I have been wondering what settings you guys actually use.
Does anybody use OD/Dist pedals with their QR?Just curious.......
I think I have made up my mind and have decided to go with the Quick Rod............ ;D
I just have to come up with some quick cash now.

Hi,
I bought the amp on ebay a few weeks ago. Its the QR with the Marshall style chasis. It looks like the classic marshall. Black and Gold. It has the Mullard upgrade tubes and clean channel just like the new ones only it does not have the eq for the clean channel which really is not to important. The Eq on these amps are very subtle. The guy I bought it from owned it a few weeks and it had less then 2hrs play on it. Its virtually a new amp. I have had it now about 2 weeks. I paid $1450 for it shipped. This particular amp sold new for $1580 + shipping. The new ones are more money.. I really don't want to take a loss on it. I am willing to go $1400 shipped which is fair. Let me know what you think.

I've got a Quick Rod and play fairly modern stuff and it has WAY too much gain for me. Like, I get all I need out of it by 10 o'clock on the gain knob. And no, I'm not running anything super hot, just a Ducan Jazz/JB set. So, you shouldn't have to worry about not having enough gain unless you're going for something I'm REALLY not accustomed to.

Wow...I love the different takes on the gain of this amp.It intrigues me to no end and now I must see/hear/feel for myself.I can't stress how much I like the sounds I have heard on the clips.
Between the two extremes of you(StevieRaveOn) and Dirrty Craig(low gain/high gain) I think I will be more than satisfied with the gain of the Quick Rod.I think it will be plenty o'gain,as I run my pre-amps on most of my amps at about 12:00 to 1:30 or so......sometimes lower ,sometimes higher, depending on the amp.
I hope to find out for meself very soon .
