What`s up everyone! This is my first post here , I`m very close to ordering a Quick Rod. Dirty Craig was raving about it on the Seymour Duncan forums and gave me al ot of info on it and from all the positive reviews I`ve heard I think it`s the amp for me. Right now I`m using a Mrashall JTM 45 with 2x12 cab and Tonebone Hot British Distortion with a Tubescreamer on top of that. I`ve always had to use pedals to get my tone which is as close the the early VH tone as I can get, but I also like Jake E Lees tone as well as Warren Demartini ,George Lynch and Vito Bratta on White Loins Pride album. So the Quick Rod can do it all by itself with no OD pedals? And it sounds good at low volumes? And how is the effects loop? I guess the only thing that scares me is the price and having to wait 8 weeks for it , But will it be worth it? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Welcome to the forum... I am a new quickrod owner myself. I bought mine on ebay last week. Its the old model without the eq for the clean channel. I have been tinkering around with the amp for the last few days. To me it sounds kind of like a Marshall Jubilee with much more gain and not as thin. Its kind of hard to get a good sound at a real low level cause its a bit fuzzy and thin. The amp is made to crank but does get a nice cruch at lower levels. Definately no pedals needed. Has gain like the Bogners, Soldanos... Its really not a great bedroom amp. I don't play out so its not the ideal amp for me but like most guitar players from the 80's era I have always sought after the early VH tone. This amp has a great sound in itself but not sure really how close it is to Ed's early tone? I may get critisized for this but I hear a little bit of the 5150 in this amp also. I can say this I doubt any amp will come close to sound like Ed's old sound in the studio. Even if the tone is close the way his amp came out on tape is just amazing. I think the quick rod is a great hi gain amp thats priced really good compared to other botique amps out there. To say it is the ideal sound well its all in your ears. I think any distorted sound will have its issues, even Ed's.

Thanks for the info ! Does your amp have EL34s and half power switch? Since the amp isn`t ideal for your bedroom jamming why don`t you just sell it to me ;D And that`s no joke!

Hi,
Yes it has the EL 34's and half power switch. I run it on 50 watts and its still blairing loud. The guy I bought it from basically never used it so I got a new amp and saved a few $$$. I really don't need it but I bought knowing that. For my use I just need a small practice amp but I get board with sounds and like to change. These splawn amps sound great for what they do but they are not like say a mesa where you can get different distorted and clean sounds. Its a straight forward amp. If I didn't find this used quick rod I was going to consider ordering a new pro-stock which is a quick rod or pro rod without the clean channel. If you don't care about the clean then that your best bet being it is his lowest priced amp at $1500. I paid $1400 but its got a clean channel so I figured it was worth it being the amp was only a few weeks old with no use. Plus I like the look of the old quick rod better. It looks like a vintange marshall.

Well,
I finally got to turn my quick rod rod up today and fine tune the settings. Very nice! I find for me I like the OD/2 with the Presence on 8 the bass on 4 the mid on 3 the treble on 7 and the pre amp on 4. I noticed the increase in compression as you turn it up. Its very ballsy cranked up! Much nicer then at low levels. I think I need a new cab. I am playing through a 1x12 boogie with a vintage 30 celestion. It sounds great but I don't know how will the one speaker will hold up! I need to learn how to create sound clip files. Anyone familiar with how to do it. I have a mac computer not a PC. Any suggestions...

Well my dream will finally be coming true. I`m getting a Quick Rod used. It`s an early version with the shared Eqs for clean dirty.I`m pretty nervous since I`ve never actually sat in a room and played one but everything I hear is positive and if it can nail EVHs and Lynchs tone I`m happy. So what can I expect from this amp tonewise , does it have enough gain to more that the "Brown Sound" and should I have any concerns on getting it used , realiability wise.

PLENTY of gain on these amps. Scott makes these things to last. There are no transistors and tube sockets mounted on thin PC boards like new Marshalls. I decided that I wouldn't buy another amp that I could not service myself. This thing is made from transformers, tubes, caps and resistors (like a vintage tube amp). The clean tone is ok but nothing amazing like a Fender or even a Boogie. The amp does sound great distorted though. I have never had a Marshall (I was a Boogie player) so I am still getting used to the lack of compression compared to a Boogie Mark 2C. It has that sound that makes you stand in front of it playing just power chords for hours with a smile on your face because it breaks up so nicely.
