This may be Sac Religious but has anyone dropped a soldano hot mod into a Splawn? You know, just to see what it would sound like with a hair more gain. I'm digging the comp, but I'm tempted to try it or an overdrive of some sort to get a little more saturation.

I just demo'd my Comp for a guy. He brought along a Keely modded DS-1. Up to that point, I thought modding pedals and such was just a bunch of cork sniffery. However, his Keely really worked sweet, and to my ears did not alter the tone noticeably but added saturation. My Tube Screamer on the other hand, changes the tone quite a bit for the worse.

I'll have to check that out. It turns out the guitar I have been playing needs the pickup raised quite a bit. I pulled out my les paul and it was like night and day, tons of gain. I had to back off on the gain knob. I'm still curious about that DS-1.

vlad tried one in his marshall...didn't like it... I think dirrty craig has a keeley modded SD 1..the baked mod..he digs it....I'm partial to my maxon OD808...I like the way it works with the QR...
some say the BB preamp doesn't 'color' your tone but adds more saturation....not sure I buy into a pedal in front of teh amp not changing the tone at all...but it is what it is I suppose

I'd call Mike (Soldano) and ask whether or not it would work with the amp to start. Those Hot Mods were only designed to work with single channel Marshalls back in day, so I don't know how that would interact with the circuitry in the amp or if it would give a pleasing result.
For the Hot Mod itself, I didn't like it. I loved the Soldano "modded" Marshall I played before, but that was more akin to a Soldano than a Marshall after the fact. The Hot Mod was pretty bright sounding, too bright for me. I preferred an OD pedal. I'm with Shredder and like the Maxon OD808 the best for overall use, though the Keeley modded pedals are really nice too.

wolf makes a great point..something I forgot...it was intended for single channel amps...
doesn't the hot mod just consist of sockets that go between the tube pins and the input socket on the amp?
