Ok so I have a Comp but no speakers (I know i'm suewwft) but i'm going to get something this week so I want your opinions.
I'm looking at an avatar (2x12) Vintage and Contemporary but I really don't ;know which one is better.
I play metal about 90% of the time so take that into consideration. I am also mostly a home player who would like to make some recordings in the near future.
So far i am looking at the Vintage open back loaded with mixed Hellatones. (V30/H30) Do you guys think that would be a good mix for recording/home jamming doing mostly metal with some lower gain stuff thrown in occasionally? I like the scooped sound however that is not too important. what I want most out of a cab is to be warm, but still have enough umph to do metal at the turn of a few dials. I've been working a lot on my classic rock and blues tones so i dont want to compromise that.
Also what impedance should I get if i would like to one day add another 2X12?
thanks ants

Are there any downsides to a closed back cab?

the closed back cab will be more focused and will project low end better. if you play metal 90% of the time, i would DEFINITELY go closed back.

Does anyone have experience with either the Vintage and/or Contemporary Avatar cabs? The Vintage looks exactly like Splawn's oversized cab. The contemporary looks like you could run it over with a truck though. Plus you can choose your cosmetics with the contemporary. What fun choices. Anyone want to jump in with some opinions on speaker choices and impedance. all opinions are welcome:) So far I gather that the V30s are not too popular in these neck if the woods, but why? Are they not very mid friendly? Do they do the scooped sound well? Will an H30 balance it out nicely? Or should I just shut up, buy one and do a writeup for you guys

UPDATE I went with the Avatar Contemprary. Here it is Its very big depth wise. also beamy as hell with mixed hellatones, thus the super cool beamblockers lol.(hey it works) It does metal very well. Pinch harmonics are very loud and pronounced. I don't really notice the ice pick highs too much while playing metal, but i backed off the volume and gain to get a clean tone so I could practice Long Distance Runaround and wow, my ears bleed. I think the neighbor's small dog exploded too. Once I get this icepick thing settled, I will have a killer setup.

I liked those when I had them in an Avatar 4x12. I have a Splawn 2x12 with the Big Blocks now. A little bassier than the Avatar 4x12, but I think it's the big blocks.

You know you love my paisties. lol
I really like the riffage. They sound great for high gain, but my initioal ipmresion is that they are bright... combined with a trebley pickup and a pissed off amp, it's just a bit much. Plus I just had to show that stupid pic:p. New strings should help balance out some stuff. And I'v been playing in small room so i have to stand in front of the amp. I;m sure that has a lot to do with it. Even that Epiphone sounded beamy today, and that's usually smooth as butter. I plan to AB them soon. The Epi has really nice reverb. It should make for a good clean channel. Its jazzy with just a small bit of breakup at high volume. That YES tune I was practicing today was sounding really good though that today.

Just an update because there isn't much posting in this Competition forum:
I've had my rig for a month now and I couldn't be happier. The Avatar is doing great. Heck even the Hellatones are warming up. They're pretty good speakers for metal. I think the icepick thing is do to there not being a clean channel on the Comp and me trying to sqeeze a clean tone out of it. The Comp is a metal monster, plain and simple. Last night i was loving the metal tone and I was still in gear one. It was kinda a wow moment to say the least. This amp is so sweet I see a few more in my future. Super Stock or Nitro, now there's a hard choice we should all be so blessed with making.
on a side note, the 2x12 avatar is cool but still a bit big. Depth wise it's bigger than any 4x12 by like 6". So i still need help transporting it. which is a b*tch, seeing as how that defeats the purpose of a 2x12... but hey maybe it's the price one pays for tone.

Hey Panties, I know this is an old thread, so I hope you see a new post.
Considering picking up another cab - an Avatar 2x12 with this combination. I'm more interested in the speakers than the cab, really. But with Avatar being so fast with shipping, and you can get another cab for just another 150, I'm thinking of getting one anyway to keep at the "garage" so I don't have to keep carting my Splawn 2x12 around every week. Are you still using the H30/H60 combo? If so, are you still experiencing the ice pick highs? Also, I wasn't sure from your post if the pronounced highs were most noticeable in high gain or clean.
