Almost 2 yrs ago I tried a Quick Rod and to honest I really didn`t care for it , maybe it`s EL34 amps since I`ve never had much luck with them. It did sound really good cranked but I usually play at low volumes. Now the Competiton is looking really interesting since I like really basic amps. How do KT88 or KT77 tubes make a difference over the EL34 tubes? Does the Competion sound good at low volumes? I`ve usually had better luck with 6L6/5881 amps with a clean tone using OD pedals but the Competition is calling my name. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The cool thing is you can have Splawn put 6L6's in the amp if you wanted.. The competition will probably be good for ya since it has pentode/triode switch for lower volumes. unlike the QR which only gets you 50 watts on half power.. only 3db drop! Kt88's are darker, deeper tubes. I like the 5881s.. they have a cool growl. I dont have a competition yet.. but its ordered!! I would suggest calling Scott and talking about what you like and see what suggestions you guys come up with. just about any octal tube can be used. Even KT66s!

EdVanZep,
I don't have tons of experience with tube amps as the Comp is my first. I have a Line 6 that I've had the last 5 years or so. So, I don't have much to compare with.
Having said that, I use the volume-pedal in the effects loop, use it as sort of another master volume. I can turn the master past 9:00, where it wants to be, and to my ears, it sounds great at bedroom volumes.
I think some of Shreder's an Dirrty Craigs clips were recorded at bedroom volumes and they sound great. I have used a Hot Plate and I've used this volume pedal thingy, and to my ears the Volume pedal thingy works best - and best of all it feels better. It was almost as if the Hot Plate was fighting the amp some - it was stiffer. I spoke with Scott about it and he recommends that method to using an attenuator, because he feels the attenuator works the amp differently, and harder. Of course, Scott's recommendation is no attenuation at all and just crank it - but you know few of us have that kind of freedom.
Dad gum, I'm going to have to record a video clip one of these days when I get a moment alone.
-Matt

For $1350, this is the best purchase you will ever make. I bought mine last October and play it every day. I'm 41, haven't been in a band for at least 10 years, owned probably 6 Marshalls, plus a ton of other crap over my 23 years of playing guitar, and this is flat out the best piece of musical gear I have ever owned. This amp spews nothing but creamy goodness every time I start it up. The only effect I use with this is a Holy Grail reverb thru the effects loop, and sometimes a very old Boss super OD and I still can't get over the range of tones this thing has.

Again , Thanks for all the info. I think when I mentioned playing at low volumes I might have mislead you guys , it won`t always be played at low volumes since I`m sure they sound smoking cranked up. Does anyone know the the length of the head cab? I`m wondering how it might fit on my mesa cab.

29.5" seems to stick in my mind - same as the cabs.
