Comp sounds so daggone good

The Comps sounds great to begin with. I noticed that after having a Crown and Coke, it just sounds even better. Not sure what that's all about. Currently playing in 25-watt mode and loving the more mellowish tone.

BUT, I gotta say I have to kick myself as to how good this thing sounds. Each gear, each OD - everything sounds great no matter where I set the knobs - and everything has it's own voice. I honestly don't know how Scott does it with only 3 preamp tubes. To think I nearly bought a 20-year old Marshall for about the same price. I really gotta go thank those that steered me in this direction. This was the best gear purchase I ever made outside of taking lessons.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I'm just feeling the love. I'm a hack, but I've noticed that my playing is better over the last 6 months of so of having this amp. At first it was unforgiving, but I think I'm starting to finally get past that and now it is working in my favor. Whenever I play something less forgiving I feel like I can play twice as better as before - but no TONE!

I'm spoilt bad now. I'm gonna go and thank all those people now:

VOM - ELVH Fan - This board is your baby, and I know it must have been a labor of love when you were the only one posting back in the beginning. I can probably speak for everyone when I say that I would not own one of these things without this board. You've done an incredible service for Splawn and the world in general - Thanks.

The rest of y'alls - you make my life more interesting. Thanks for your help and thanks for the laughs.

Did I mention Crown and Coke? It's the only attenuator anyone really needs.

Hey jammermatt what's crown and coke?? About the 25 watts mod, I don't like in nearly as much as full power mode, it sounds more like a mesa mark I or II to my ears and less big, less aggressive, less percussive. What it does well is tame the highs though, I suggest you try going back to full power for a while see if you like it cause I really feel like you're missing out the true splawn tone.

I am using an Avatar 4x12 with Hellatone 30s and 60s in an X-patter - IN MY HOUSE. I throw two pillows in front of the bottom two to cut the volume a little. I think they are warm speakers, and like some of the other forum bros, the 60s (aged V30s) are a tad much, and I like the 30s better (I think I have that right - Aged G12H30s). I'm a bedroom jammer for the most part, and play with my buds about once a week (where I don't use my Splawn). I'm on the fence with the cabinet. I mean it sounds fine... for me, but I am so dang curious as to what difference a Splawn OS212 would make with the Eminence. I will probably eventually buy one, but for now it's not a great crusade.

LOL. Crown and Coke = Crown Royal with Coca Cola. I know, it's anathema to drown Crown Royal with Coke, but I figure I bought it, I can drink it how I like.

I agree with what you say about the 25w vs 50w difference. There IS a difference, and I find it most especially at low volumes. 50 watts is definitely more in-your-race, more raw and aggressive. I do like the sound of that and I do like the sound of the Mesas you mentioned - sort of like having two amps. I go back and forth, but I think at lower volumes the 25 watts seems to saturate faster for legato, a tad smoother.

25 watts goes better with Crown and Coke. 50 watts is more Jack Daniels and water - maybe Jack straight up - I'll have to research that some more. Knowatimsayin?

I'm also in the "waiting for my Competition" boat, but it's sure fun to read some positive propaganda like Matt has here! Thanks for posting this, it helps while we play the waiting game.

All I can do is break in my new Eminence X-pattern 2x12 cab with a lesser amp so the speakers are singing their best when the Competition arrives.

All that worries me is the talk of volume! Pillows in front of the speakers?! My gods, man. I play at home, hear very well and value my ears too much to go for the high volumes you crazy people talk about. I really really hope the low volume tone doesn't suck as much as people say it does. If so I suppose it will be volume pedal time.

Ayton, I don't have any problems. I've used a Hot Plate, and currently use a Volume pedal in the loop. Maybe my ear sucks, but I don't think it sounds bad at all. Either options works for me. I only use the pillows to turn a 4x12 into a 2x12.

I'm gonna have to do a quick video clip of the 25 watt, volume pedal tone. See what you all think, whether you like it as much as me. Playing would suck, though.
