Well after much messing with the amp to get the tone I wanted, tried different pickups, guitars, endless speakers..
Eventually got this amp to sound like it should and im very happy running my Ibanez RG550, Stock pickups which will be changed.. into Splawn obviously.. into an open back Vintage 30 2x12..
and it's absolute heaven to my ears best tone i've ever heard in my life.. period!

That's great, dude. It sounds like after all your fiddling around you ended up with a pretty straight-forward setup - like mine.
Jackson/JB > Splawn > 4x12 H30/V30 mix. I likes. The only thing I wish I would've done differently is blown the extra wad for a Splawn 2x12. But, for what I do my cab works great for me even though it's quite unpopular on this board.
I'm an utter hack, but it sounds great to me.
BTW, interested to hear what speakers you tried and what your thoughts were on them.

Good to hear you're diggin' the amp.
Quick question...the Competition is supposed to have a pentode/triode switch (unique to the Competition) that cuts power from 50 to 25 watts. Usually, triode mode makes things A LOT warmer and smoother. Have you had a chance to try it out? Any chance you can do a recording, maybe just some chords or something, between the two modes?

just had a go with the triode/pentode switch you loose a lot of clarity in the high end and the sparkle that makes the splawn sound.. it warms up a bit and kinda sounds a bit more like a stock marshall bit muddy.. but it's a nice alternative.
