I know some of the bro's have talked about a little fizz you get when playing at low volume. It's just the nature of the beast I know - the Comp wants to crank and low vol ain't it's thang.
But, tonight I found something that seemed to work for me. I used OD1 (with any gear), dialed BACK the gain to about noon to 2 o'clock and put my tubescreamer in front, drive about 9:00 and level about 3:00 (sort of a clean boost if you will). Put my presence about 10:00 and kept the mids and treble below the bass. Using OD2, it's over-the-top fun.
Seemed like the TS gave it plenty of push for sustain, etc, and without all the gain the low-volume fizz seemed almost a non-issue. Sounded pretty d**n good I thought. On 3rd gear it seemed that cool kinda compressed sounding where you get great saturation and sustain.
Anyway, it seems to work for me... or my ears suck, one of the two.
Which brings me to a question. Even though the Comp has tons of gain, I still find myself wanting to dial back to about noon and pushing it with a tubescreamer (like I described above). It seems to suit my playing best (it's what I grew accustomed to with my Line 6).
First I thought it must be blasphemy like why would anyone ever do this with such a great sounding amp? But then I thought... well, whatever works best for you.
What thinkest y'all?

That is a great tip jammermatt. The only effect I had tried in front of the Competition has been a TS9DX analog Mike mod. an it is the best sounding combination so far. I do not use it that often though, but it does bring an edge to a remarkable sounding amp. I am going to try your settings today, keep those tips coming jm.

Luigi, I'm using a TS9DX also. Mine was modded by a member of the Seymour Duncan forum. It has a little bit more edge and "sugar" than the original pedal. Can't describe it - it just is. I forgot to mention - I was using a Hot Plate also, about -8db. I'm going to try the Midiverb/Rocktron trick one of these days when I scrape up enough $$. The tone with this setup probably lacks some definition to some ears - but it works for me, and I'm the one who paid for it . At any rate - it was a good practice session. On 1st gear I was butchering Panama, but smiling the whole time.

or my ears suck too :-) haha..

Cool JM. I've got a Keeley modded TS-9 so I think I will try it also. .. ..... On a side note, Hey Vom and Shred, why is the titles and text only half the size in the Competition section? Is it because we are all 50 Watters so we get half the size? hehe....

I hear ya'll on that......I just bought a Bad Monkey and that's what I've been using for lower volume jamming. Granted, I have a Pro Stock running on KT88's but I still use the 50 watt setting. Damn this amp is still sooooo loud even at 50 watts! The Bad Monkey was cheap as hell and sounds pretty damn good. Nice thing about it is it has seperate bass and treble settings instead of just a tone knob. Normally when I run my 808 clone it gets too harsh but with the Digitech you can push the bass up and reduce the treble and it takes on a nice overdriven sound that is alot warmer. I would love to get a Hot Plate so I could push the power tubes a little bit more at lower volumes. I'm still having a hard time getting rid of the buzzy distortion cuz I just can't crank it up loud enough at the house and get it past that point in volume where it starts to smooth out and get that grindy edge. Everytime I even get near 8:00 on the volume knob my wife wants to come unglued, LOL!
