Noobie question. Researching the Splawn amps. Of course I would love to get the QR, but realistically I'd rather not spend the extra 400 bucks if the Competition will work for me.
No doubt about it, this would be an amp for rockin', but I've played clean from time to time.
So, exactly what does it mean for this amp to not have a clean channel? Does that mean it cannot play clean? Or does it mean that the "dirty" channel is also the clean channel, and you cannot have channel switching between a clean setting and an overdrive setting?
Just a little confused is all.

Hey Jammermatt,
Sorry nobody answered your question. I just got my Compettion Thursday night so I'll try to help you out. The Comp is just a single channel amp like the old Marshalls - there is no separate clean channel. BUT, if you roll back the volume knob on your guitar you can get a somewhat cleaner tone with some edge to it, especially in 1st gear.
As an example, you know VH's Ain't Talkin' Bout Love where in the middle part that quiets down - "I've been to the edge, where I stood and looked down........." the arppegiated chords in the background are what you can get. An edgy sort of clean - the kind I like!

Socal,
Thanks for the response. I think I might know you from another forum?? Your answer totally makes sense now that I think about it. I guess I need to be thinking Early JCM type Marshalls - single channel.
Here's another question for you: From the reading I've done, I'm a bit confused whether the Competition has 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. Quite frankly, my feeling is that the description on the main page is a big vague and could be a tad clearer, but then again I can be bit thick. Some things I read indicate yes, some things no. So, since you're sittin' right next to one, what's your read?
Thanks

The Comp is the only one that is footswitchable between gears because it doesn't have a clean channel so Scott had 'room' to add something. On the amp itself there is a knob - 1st and 2nd gear/2nd and 3rd gear. With the footswitch you can switch from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd but not 1st to 3rd. I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask more! Steve

Socal,
Can you clarify what OD#1 and OD#2 is? How do these relate to 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears?
Wanted to comment on what you had said about that "edgy" sort of clean. Yes, I know what you're talking about. I like that sound, but have never really been able to find it - probably because I've been looking in the wrong place. I have a Line 6, and when I go to a clean setting, it's "clean." Never really thought about using a "dirtier" setting and dialing down.
Glad you're liking your new amp. I saw one going for about a grand on Ebay, but I'm not a fan of the color. I'd be going for a more traditional black look probably - with bullseye faceplate. Also, the having the warranty by going new is probably money well spent.
Yes, from the SD forum. Nice to seeya again.

Matt, the OD is an additional gain boost available on all of the gears. It's always on OD1 (I guess that's why they're hot-rodded tones!) and you can footswitch into OD2 and back. For instance, I find 1st gear is good for AC/DC type tone and rolling back the gain even gets you older 'Free' type of distortion. Then kicking in OD2 in 1st gear brings you VHs brown sound - my favorite!.
I agree the lifetime warranty is a nice thing to have. See ya!
