Ok,
I've been playing guitar for about 25 years. Now, my 6year old son is wanting to follow in my foot steps and pick up an axe!!! woo-hoo I've been showing him basic finger coordination exercises...but I don't wan't him to get burned out as exercises tend to get a little mindless. Where should I take him next as a beginner?
Odd question I know...but when I was learning...I always knew what I needed to figure out next. And in this case, I'm not too sure. Any guitar teachers out there?
Thanks for the input!
Patrick

Teach him to read music (Not tab!!).. those Mel Bay book #1,2,3 are good for kids. Reward him with a song or something he wants to do when he makes progress with the other stuff. Balancing chords, scales, theory and then songs for rewards is always a great formula.

buy him some tab to songs he likes and see if he's motivated enough to try to play some passages from them...if he's motivated to learn that way then he may be interested in the guitar for life...
mel bay books are going to scare the bejesus outta that kid...

I'm tellin' ya from personal experience,, you teach a 6 year old how to read music and he'll do better in school, his regular reading will improve, he'll excel at math, he'll be ahead of the other kids in music classes and he'll be more likely to stick with it.
When hes old enough to be influenced by his friends and popular music he'll end up buying whatever guitar mag is available and learn tab anyway.

Manoopee, I too, think you should take him to a teacher that will teach to read music. or you teach him using melbay. there are songs in book one. at 6 he is a sponge! he will pick it up fast. I started learning to read guitar music at 10 with mel bay. then in 3rd grade while playing sax. well worth it. if he keeps playing, and likes it, and can read, he will be playing guitar in school in the jazz band, and side projects I am sure. plus when he is 10, he will be rippping!! at 20, a real studio musician is possible!

Thanks for all the input guys! I don't think I can bear to walk through a Mel Bay book...too many bad memories. So, I think I may have to leave this one to the professionals. I did ask him what kinds of songs he'd be interested in learning, he simply stated "3 Doors Down". I don't know why I think that soooo funny....just strikes me odd i guess. Later, Patrick

Well, I've never done any teaching but there was a youngster in the neighborhood that wanted to learn so after showing him some open chords and alternate picking exercises, he got frustated and wanted to sound like he was actually playing something. So I showed him a basic blues shuffle and told him to play it with a metronome and it would help him grasp some rhythm. Then I showed him the chords to "Hey Joe" so he could grasp those open chords and play a song at the same time. He is getting better using this approach.

Later, Patrick Yes Patrick, Show him something that is musical and that he likes to play. He'll get better at that. Then show him more songs. After that hit him with the exercises. D
