Anyone seen or tried the new flanger label "unchained"? I am sure Vom will have one real soon! Just saw it in the new guitar mag.

Here is some info i found..."This amazing stompbox features the same bucket-brigade technology that provided the sweeping, whooshing magic of the original. But Dunlop didn’t stop there. We’ve also added the EVH Switch, which instantly calls up Eddie’s “Unchained” sound with the exact same Manual, Speed, Width, and Regeneration settings that he used to get one of the greatest guitar tones of all time. If that’s not cool enough, we painted the EVH Flanger with the rocking striped graphics that started a revolution. Get the MXR EVH 117 Flanger and hit the ground running."

I'm never impressed by MXR products. I wanted to get the EVH phaser but it sounded so thin to me when I tried it, like it just milked the tone of its ballz. I also know they have alot of issues with noise. Anyone who says you sound like "so-and-so" or "song x" at the push of a button is full of shiite. There's a bit more to the unchained tone then one effect pedal, ya know. Sorry for crapping in your salads guys, just my 2 cents.

In your opinions.........what would be a really great flanger? I don't care about name brand, just really great quality. I want something that will do the Unchained thing.........yet also the sound on Hear About It Later/ Dirty Water Dog. Using a Flanger with a clean tone can be really cool!

Using a Flanger with a clean tone can be really cool! the TZF flanger (through zero flanger...by FoxRox) is da best I've used, the Fulltone Choralflange has a real nice warm flange tone....Electro Harmonix has a new one out but I'm not aware of any feedback from it...the problem with cheap flanger pedals is that 'usually' the stock flanger just makes these irratating metallic shrill whosh swirling jet noises...the real good 'analog' pedals do it (pitch/phase shifting) much smoother and warm tone...more expensive (of course) though.

i have a old school mxr phase 90 from 1974. i agree with demon there's more going on with ev tone on unchained.my pedel sounds a little thin to me. maby its because his tracks were probaly tripled so they sound real thick i know thats what ozzy did with the two randy roads albums. they quad tracked randys guitar tracks. im sure you guys know that any way

No his tracks were not tripled,, at least not on unchained, thats one guitar in the intro section.
I agree with Don though,, the MXR stuff robs high-end and tone, but I still love its phase effect. If you listen to someone that has good VH tones for example AL Estrada hes running tons of treble and high mids which will not only get you into VH territory but compensate during the phase 90 switch-on. I just don't run my highs that high.
Of course the easy answer to that problem is the VHT Valvulator. I wouldn't run through a pedal without that. It literally saves the tone and sounds like I'm running right into the amp when the pedals off.
For Flangers, I've never heard anything as transparent and thick as the ADA '79 reissue. Its TRUE bypass and It will do unchained spot on as well as all those cool Steve Stevens laser gun sounds. Check out Paul Gilberts newer stuff too its all over his records. I broke the power cable though, I need to rewire it and get it back on mny pedal board.

I use the Ibanez FL-9 which they just reissued. I like it so much that I just ordered a reissue because my switch was finicky/ Its common problem on the 'vintage' ones. But the reissues sound just as good and I think are true bypass now as well. A very warm sounding analog flanger in a very ugly yellow case:(.
The ADA that Craig has is supposedly the 'holy grail' of flangers but i have never heard one. For one they are way overpriced and they have that AC cord which I don't have room for. I have heard great things about them though.
