I gotta say Vom, I really hate cover bands because despite what craig and shredder think, I hate pop music! I really just can't stomach the music (no offense to you guys, just my tastes). I hate pop music too, and would never dream of playing pop covers anymore even though I have in the past. But, don't think your taking the musical high-ground by doing originals exclusively, cause unless you get that big break you'll find yourself in your mid-30's with $2.00 in your pocket wondering what happened with your musical career. My advice to any musician who is serious, is get out and play ANYTHING, make some cash and do it for a living. You have PLENTY of time to do originals on the side and in-between paying gigs. Plenty of time. I've managed to do both for 15 years, now I own a beautiful house, nice cars, swimming pool and have no money worries because of cover bands and teaching guitar lessons paying my bills all those years. Think about it.  you are a rarity Craig....most guys can't put all that together and make it work...I know I sure can't...I get approached for guitar lessons every time I play (not brag just truth...) I could probably pull in between 30-60K a year if I really pursued it...there aint NOBODY up here that can shred and the kids wanna learn....I just don't have the patience to 'baby sit' alot of these 'guitar players'...deal with the 'no-shows' etc...drive me nuts! there are some bar bands up here with the typical 'prima-donna' guitar players Stevie Ray wannabees think they are ALL THAT and a bag o chips...but, no STEADY year round gigs...and...most importantly to me, I can't play in an environment that promotes a 'drunken' lifestyle...not what I think God wants me here for...not judging anybody here...just a limiting statement that applies to me. |

I agree w/ jimbax that you are a rarity. Every cover band player I know around here drives old beat up cars and doesn't look to well off. Alot of the aged worn out rocker types who htink chicks want to see their fat arses falling out of their ripped jeans.

I'm not a rarity, you guys are just stereotyping. I know guys doing way better than me.
Jim I joke alot about the booze, but honestly I don't drink during the week, I have a few or 12 on the weekends and live a pretty "normal" life, happily married for 8 years etc etc etc.. 2 dogs, 4 cats,, house in the suberbs.. LMAO.
I played for a livin for a long time, these days its all about getting better for me. Working on my playing and not worrying about anyone, trends or styles,, etc.. I also own an internet business thats done really well which was a complete accident side-thing that worked..
