Just tossing the idea I have about try 12AT7 tube in V3 in my quickrod, should give more bandwidth, ( fatter sound yet!) but at the expense of a little drive, anyone tried one? I am curious if Scott has tried it! hmmmmmm

I'll find out in about a week. I just recently order a JJ 12AT7 and a RCA 12AT7. I'm bought them to try in V1 of my Version 3 Quick Rod to see if can tame the clean channel a bit. I didn't think about trying them in the PI slot. I'll give it a try.

Hacksaw,
I spoke with Scott about that last year...he said it would do pretty much exactly what you state in your post. It will probably lose some of that "bite", but give you a fatter sound. IMO, that would be pretty sweet on 3rd gear as there is more gain than I could ever use on that channel.

Craggin, ya.. I have to try a 12at7, I am ordering a couple JJ 12at7, (got another amp that a guy has that is too agressive for his country playin) this sounds too interesting! I've been adding a compressor to boost up/level out the levels into the preamp. with good results. so I think I can add a 12at7 and get a huge full wall of sound with the drive in tact maybe. I am going to be very curious too see how far I have to drive the amp for a little power tube saturation.
I read the specs... the difference is about 30 ma from the 12ax7 (approx 100 ma), going to the 12at7 (approx 70 ma).
fuelgtrx, Get your tubes yet? I am intersted in comparing notes. :-)

Okay, I got my JJ ECC81 (12AT7) and RCA 12AT7 tubes in today. I played around with the 2 in V1 (clean channel slot on a V3) and in the PI slot.
In the PI slot, these tubes seemed to tame the amp down, even it out, smooth it out, and makes it sound more like a good JCM 800. The RCA smoothed out things a bit to much and took alot of agression from the sound. I really didn't like it there. The JJ ECC81 was a good medium between the ECC83S and the RCA 12AT7, leaning a little to the RCA. The amp sounds much more even and tamed the amp down. It didn't cut too much gain, I only moved it up a notch and thats a little more than needed.
Now in the clean slot, the RCA really shined. The JJ ECC81 warmed up the clean channel a bit and made it less harsh, but it was still kinda ice picky. The RCA 12AT7 really warmed up the clean channel while still letting it sparkle a bit. Very Fender like now. Before, the clean channel had way too much punch and would make it sound harsh. The RCA 12AT7 really did the trick.
All in all, I really like what I ended up with. I'm keeping the JJ ECC81 in the PI slot and the RCA 12AT7 in V1 (clean slot). I'm going to leave them in there while to see if I really think these are here to stay.
