Good morning, all.
Hacksaw's right in everything he posted. As he mentioned, I've tried several brands of tubes (pre and power) in my QR. The biggest, most noticeable change came from the KT77's...they had the most recognizable EQ and character difference. I had an old Marshall JCM800 that I had the Siemens 6CA7's in...and really regret selling that amp with the tubes in it...I'd love to hear how they would've sounded in the QR. (They kicked all kinds of booty in the Marshall.)
Vom, IMHO, power tubes change the tone...sometimes in a subtle way, other times more dramatically. (Depends on the tube) I usually notice as big, if not bigger...a change in "feel". (That isn't always a good thing.)
So far, my favorite tubes I've used in the QR's are the JJ KT77's and the Mullard (reissue) EL34's. The SED winged "C" were a very close runner up.
The preamp tubes make a difference, too. I like the JJ's in my older QR with shared EQ...I've got the new Tung-Sol in V1 and V2, with JJ's in V3 and V4 of my new QR. I wasn't crazy about the JJ's in the clean channel. I'd be willing to bet that's why shreder75 is so crazy in love with the EH12ax7's in his QR...they brighten up the amp. IMHO, JJ's (especially the higher gain JJ pre's) can be on the noisy side...irrelevenat when playing, but noticeable between songs.
I put a few NOS pre's in there...they sounded much better in 3rd gear than in 1st. (Again, IMO.) The RFT's had a pretty cool vibe to them...but don't use them in a slot where your clean channel is going to rely on them...they have NO headroom, and add some unwanted dirt.
The JJ's sound great in gain slots of the QR...as do EH's (yes shreder75...I tried them based on your findings). I also liked the RFT's, Telefunken's, Siemen's, and Tung-Sol reissues. One thing I'll add (again, IMO)...I didn't feel the NOS preamp tubes made enough of a difference to justify their high cost. I have a bunch laying around from old amps passing through my collection...looks like I'll be keeping them in storage for the time being.
Oh, I also tried the Ruby 7025ss and liked them a lot!!!
