After all the power tubes changes I have put in my Quickrod. so, I have one question still remaining. Has anyone tried the Sylvania's EL34's (6ca7's) in a Quickrod? "IF" I can find a set that doesnt cost a whole bunch of money, I would like to try this next!

Good chat! My experience with power tubes, there is a difference. it may be small, and Corksniffin here.. but to me, its dependant on the tube "type" and "brand" like the Svets winged C was more middy, the Svets russia was about the same but lackeed something compared to the C which I cant describe. the JJ E34L's where a little deeper but crisper on the mids to me. the Kt77's where deeper yet, had more headroom, and a more aggressive top end. now thats my ears! LOL.. and its also dependant on bias! the hotter the less headroom. the mullards and the svetlana do have a different sound in comparison. Probably the widest difference I heard was the JJ KT77's compared to the mullards ( which I still use). I got info from a guy using just two KT88's in a quickrod. really likes it.
agreed the NOS are pricey!!!! and todays tubes are built well. the thing that makes me want to try the NOS? they where made in the day on different equipment. sometimes that process just made a really sweet tube. I am probably been over analyzing since I like the sound I have with the mullards. But, its fun for me since I have a tube fetish.. I love setting the amp on half power and cranking the power tubes up and hearing them. that seems to produce the biggest change in tubes to me.
sniff sniff... oooow nice cork!

what happens if you put in new tubes and don't bias them?

what happens if you put in new tubes and don't bias them? oh.. nothing to harm the amp. its mostly going to be the amps output sound thats going to tell you what to do next. they can sound anywhere to fuzzy distorted saturated over biased, to a grainy strange broken buzz being under biased ( due to being out of the cross over point, thats usually measured with a oscilloscope, which most of us biasing never use one!). So, if a drop a set of tubes in, and it sounds a bit fuzzy, but good, back off the bias a bit and the fizz will go away and it will start to sound great. if it is grainy and sounds like a crate blue voodu, pump up the bias. ( those amps are biased so cold its unreal).

so, depending on who biases your amp...it could change the tone you're used to?

in my opinion, ya.. it could. It would/could color it. rather is be the fuzz, less headroom, or lightly saturated bass ( or more!) we actually would loose, clarity/definiton like we have now. Why? usually most amp guys bias at 70%, most are used to this bias setting. The splawn likes it normal at 60%. so a ampguy could actually set you hot thinking its like a hot marshall design. it happens, and you wonder why it doesnt sound the same.
are you thinking of trying a new brand of power tube?
Motrock is another great resource on tubes, as is Craggin. both have tried a few other tubes like me. I think Motrock went with some NOS. Guys?!

Guys?! that's what i thought, interesting hack. i was toying w/ the idea of trying a new brand of power tubes but i'm kinda concerned about the biasing because i don't know how to do it myself and would have to depend on someone else doing it
