Ok, so most of my guitar playing life I've insisted on the best components for my guitars as I believe they help make the best instruments.
So, last night I go over to one of my ol' buddies to kick back. Well, lo and behold he's got a new axe. I'd never heard of the builder...still not sure who it is but my friend said it was a prototype for this builders new line. Hmmm...yummy I thought...let me check it out!
So I plug in. Sorry Splawners, this guy is super into the Marshall Plexi, and even through the Plexi the guitar sounded pretty darn good. Not only that....it felt good, and it looked like an ACE. When I found out that he only paid $500 bucks for it...I'm thinking my friend scored a cool new axe at a super reasonable price.
But what he told me next just floored me. He said the builder prefers to use junk wood when building his proto's because if something doesn't workout just right...he hasn't wasted any decent tone woods. Then he tells me that the guitar I just played was made out of a 2x4!
WHAT!? !@#$$# Ok, so now I'm thinking this is a joke. Where is the hidden camera...y'know. But my ol' buddy insisted! In fact, he flipped it over and I saw the lines where the 2x4's were glued and could clearly see 2x4-ness in the electronics cavity.
Now, I've been playing guitar for 21 years and the 2x4 guitar sounded as good as any other guitar I've ever played! I'm still stunned....dude, it was made out of a 2x4 and it sounded GOOD!
I guess I shouldn't be such a tone snob and do some rethinking about my tone choices. Heck, after last night, I might see if I can get one of those prototype guitars.
BTW...it was a strat styled guitar. Two humbuckers...Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and an SD Jazz in the neck. Hipshot bridge, sperzel tuners. A three way switch and one vol and tone.
