I don't know if anyone here is in to keyboards that much? My brother played piano and keyboard. I am looking for either a new keyboard or an external unit for my bro's keyboard that will get the classic synth sounds of Oberhiem keyboards. What would be a good unit to achieve those sounds?

Since he is in to Oberheim I assume he is hip on the Matrix 6 Architecture (last of the OBs that did the classic sounds) so I suggest that he look at the Oberheim Matrix 1000. The Oberheim OB-MX is another option -pretty pricey but is way cool :-)

My brother don't know much about the gear. I usually get all the info on the stuff.........since I am a gear head. I will look up the Oberheim stuff. Is the Martix 1000 a new unit, or are all the Oberheim stuff out of production?

Ok......here are the desired sounds. Check out the beginning of the song Lets Go by The Cars and Why Can't This Be Love by Van Halen. Also, the sounds heard on Jump - Van Halen, You Can Still Rock In America - Night Ranger, Tom Sawyer - Rush, etc. Pretty much the 80s sounding stuff. I just checked out the Oberheim unit you were talking about. Noticed that it was rack mount, which would be great for what its going to be used for. He's thinking about one of those Yamaha Motif rack units too. Almost needs a converter or something so he can switch between a couple of different units!

Hmm I will check with my buddy.. see what he thinks will do the job. I will post back later today on this with his responce. I bet he points back to the 1000 model.. UNLESS.. you just get the real unit! EVH used a Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer.. if you could locate on of those! cgi.ebay.com/Oberheim-OB-XA-w-DSX-Sequencer-Sythesizer-Vintage-OBXA_W0QQitemZ7409513959QQcategoryZ38071QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem www.vintagesynth.com/index2.html that would cover a lot.. hence the 1000 matrix, should get you very close... and cheaper.. with a few more tricks. Bonjovi, Rush, EVH.. and many more used the OB-Xa. Check this out.. my KB buddy's equipment.. 2nd to none on tone.. Showing is a Yamaha CP-70 Electric Grand Piano / Moog Model 15 Modular Analog Synthesizer / Rhodes Chroma with an ARP Chroma Expander / Korg PS 3300 Polyphonic Modular Analog Synthesizer (1 of 12 made) / Electric Mistress Flanger / Korg Analog Delay / Uni-Vibe Chorus Unit (you know, the one that Hendrix used) / Mackie 16 Channel Mixer

I might just have to get one of those OB-XA Keyboards for myself! I don't play, but it would be cool to have those sounds. My bro can do all the playing for me! LOL
Like I said, we were trying to get the sound from Why Can't This Be Love by Van Halen and Runaway by Bon Jovi. Stuff like that. I have a Bon Jovi boot from like 85, and they keyboard player was using an OB-XA.

COOL! ya I started reading who used the OB-Xa and was amazed how many in the 80's actually used it! talk about killer sounding with a splawn.. you would make some killer tracks if you had it sittin around motrock! just having one of those sitting around before they all disappear would be worth it!
EVH used the OB-Xa for jump, and other songs.

The Splawn and the Oberheim would compliment each other very well!
