Yo, yo 'Splawnsters' check it out man (in my best Randy Jackson imitation...) Follow-up to my ProMod 'up-grade'.... I added the Rio BBQ pick up to bridge position and noticed a HUGE!!!!!!! difference! Scott should duck tape a set of Rio Grande pick-ups to each amp he sells cause they are meant for each other...(I think the guitar he uses to 'dial' in the amps is Rio equipped).....now I can easily get the types of sounds on the clips on Scotts web page... I changed the Texas Special pick-ups in my Custom Shop strat to: Jason Lollar 'special' strat PU's and again...a HUGE!!!!!! difference! Scotts amps are SSSOOOO sensitive to pick-ups I can hardly believe it! Made the Texas Special PUPs (from Fender) sound like cardboard....now my Strat is usable with the ProMod (with my other PUPs it was too 'buzzy'...) I post this to hopefully help anyone that is dissapointed in the 'response' they are getting from Scotts amps....don't give up on er'......get some 'hot' quality pick-ups before you decide to move on....with all the changes I have made to my equipment (speakers/guitars/pedals) to try and get the tones like I hear from the guys on Scott's site..simply changing the PUPs has made the BIGGEST change for the better!

Totally agree! When I first got my Splawn my guitar (strat w/single coils) wasn't producing the ummmpf that I needed. I swapped out my stock single coils for Van Zandt Rock pick ups and Voila!!!

hmmm I don't know. Every one of my guitars while different all sound awesome through both my Quick Rods. I love the Rio's too though, but I can't see any guitar making the amp sound bad.

Mine didn't sound bad. That's not what I'm saying. Just (to me) didn't have what it has when I play my guitars equipped with Humbuckers. Which is obvious just playing through stock single coils.

TJ,, my guitar ended up having a short in the pickup and lost oumph.. and microphonic. I had a weak tube EL34 which probably why I was running everything wide open! haha.. got it fixed up with a replacement EL34's I had for backup and replaced the pickup with a spare I had and it has a lot more drive.. coolnesss!! most notable was the bottom end was missing.. finding the weka link in the ultimate search for tone isnt easy! we all have spent some major bucks to get "that" sound. now if I would quite jammin so much and take care of the gear!! yeaup I ignored the pickup.. and lived with it! shame on me! LOL
I too am changing pickups.. the amp just loves a hotter pickup. not that other pickups/guitars are not good sounding.. but for greatness, the hotter are better in the splawn.. I can see where jimbax is coming from. ( as I just experianced this too.. strangely enough). and it adds up why I am on 3rd gear all the time and most of you are in 2nd gear!
also.. reading jimbax's post above, nice compliment to you guys that have clips posted. and the reason most of us bought the amp ;-) I too say thanks..

Since the topic of pickup usage with Splawns came up, how hot is the Rio BBQ compared to something like a Seymour Duncan JB? I know I'll be more than happy when my Splawn comes with my Seymour Duncan JB's, but I know you guys have A/B'd more than me.

Acctually...........my friend brought over a strat style guitar and it had a Dimarzio ToneZone. I hated the tone that was coming through the Quick Rod. When I plugged my Mansel in with the BBQ it was like night and day. Another friend brought over a Les Paul with EMG 81s and it was total Zakk Wylde wickedness! I guess to each his own, but I noticed the differences with the guitars that I have plugged in to the Quick Rod!

you know who I think gives up on the splawns? people that don't know what they're getting into..
let me clarify...
there's plenty of people out there who like very saturated types of tones..people who also like their saturation in a good does of VERY heavy music...
not to say that the splawn isn't 'heavy'...but it's not a flabby, makes up for mistakes kinda heavy either..
it WILL call you on your mistakes...
also, people who want be all end all tones at low volumes..I've said it many times..it sounds pretty good at low volumes (check out all the clips...craig's, mine, several others..recorded at low volumes..my videos were shot at low volumes), but it RAGES once you open it up a little...like any good classic marshall will..hell, like any good 100 watter will...
IT'S A MODDED MARSHALL AMP TONE
if you don't like that sort of tone, then you're most likely not going to dig a quick rod...
not many people make that transition...some who loves amps such as mesa and bogner and such hear people talkin' about the splawns and decide to buy into the 'hype'..I put 'hype' in quotations cause it's not hype..it's people who're lookin' for that hot rodded marshall sound talkin' about how good it sounds..anyway, they see a bunch of people talkin' about how good it is..then they wanna play dimu borgir or napalm death or deocide through it or something...then they get pissed cause they feel like they're fighting the amp...
there's no studio magic here...there's no fudging..what you hear in teh clips is more or less what you're going to get...
so I don't think people buy it looking for that kinda tone and hate it or give up on it ...i think people get it hopeing they'll like it cause most people who buy them do, but then are disappointed cause they were never looking to play through a marshall type amp to begin with...
is it for everyone? no...is ANY amp for everyone? no..it'll work for some, it won't work for others..
anywho, I've blabbed...lol..but that's how I see it

I guess to each his own, but I noticed the differences with the guitars that I have plugged in to the Quick Rod! Dirrty Craig's Mansel with BBQ's blew my PRS Standard (all mahogany with PRS HFS pickups) out of the water through the Quick Rod. The PRS also sounded very thin and flubby when i turned the volume on the QR way down. The HFS pickups sound really rich and you can clearly hear all notes when chording, but they aren't the greatest for chugging on low notes or for fluid soloing. Some people love 'em though. My point: while not completely comparing apples to apples (Mansel to PRS) it is an all mahog to all mahog comparison and the Mansel w/BBQ's smoked the PRS with HFS's. I'm a believer in the BBQ's...at least in a Mansel through a QR I dug the BBQ's and the Mansel, so I called Scott to put in my order.

maybe the BBQ just shines in a denser wood or something..but it's not doin' much for me in my alder lynch....that's why I'm goin' back to the JB...just doesn't have enough punch for me in that guitar

The guys over at Rio Grande admit that the BBQ is 'voiced' like a JB...but, with MUCH fatter dynamics and MUCH better feedback properties...the JB will punch through more because it sits in the upper/mid range frequency less power but more treble....I think the BBQ is the perfect pick-up for the Splawn amps (either Quick or Pro) it brings out the full response of the amp (to me anyways...) I have the BBQ's in an Ibanez Satriani and in a Les Paul Standard...sounds awesome in both...this is subjective to each player...

You will be waiting a while............right Craig? LOL At least 4 months! Thats about what I waited........even longer acctually. Ordered mine last August and got it this Feb. Thats 7 months. If I could get another one within a month or 2 of ordering it, I would do it. But 7 months was crazy!
