Well, I been SOOOOO busy, I finally got around to getting some thoughts together. Theres a few threads over on HC someone else started, but heres my thoughts with a little Splawn bias...
Ok.. 1st off the turnout wasn't the best but I will say it was definitely quality over quantity both in terms of the amps and the players.
Before I get into all the amps,, I will say the 2 stars of the show were the Quick Rod and my Mansel guitar. Look at the pics on HC and you'll see like 5 different guys playing my guitar because noone could put it down. Its a bad axe! One guy is buying one and has already contacted Scott based on playing it at ampfest.
...the Quick rod smoked everything, both in terms of tone and versatility. The Engl Blackmore was a close second but lacked any real character when a/b 'ed against the QR.
My second favorite amp was a Dr. Z 4-10 combo. It would be completely useless to me, but I just dug the one bluesy tone it got. I also really liked the Blackmore.
The plexi reissue with the soldano hot-mod was cool too. Not my thing but cool.. This guy Dominick made that amp sing. He was a good classic rock style player with nice chops... but the amp definitely was missing the mark for me.
2 amps I didn't like.. Madison Divinity. Jeesh what an overhyped piece 'o poop. Sure the price is right, but that thing is a toneless cold box of nothing. I wouldn't use one if someone gave me 10 of them for free. I'm not kidding, I can't believe the hype this amp gets from the Metal kidz. POOOPY. Sorry, its the only word I can use to describe it.
The Framus Cobra.. yuck. Save your money and buy a 5150. Its the same amp with a prettier grill and more knobs. Fuzzy buzzy boring. There were a few good death metal style players there,, they liked it. But those players and the amp both were one trick pony's when it really came down to it. Not to slam those guys, they were amazingly fast, but not tone or phrasing, etc.. perfect amp for that style, but thats it.
I did buy a 1971 Les Paul Deluxe... I got an INSANE deal on it from a guy who needed money bad. I felt kinda guilty but not that guilty,, hee hee.
