yes, it's that time again...the shredman is not happy with his JB in his alder bodied lynch..lol
I like the tightness, I like the output, I like the harmonics, but it sounds a bit too compressed and it's got that high end/upper mid fizz/sizzle that I can't dial out that fatigues my ears
the muy grande seems to have the same type of DC resistance as the JB..and the tallboy has the same type of DC resistance as the duncan custom
the thing I worry about the custom is that it's got a ceramic mag..I've had two ceramic mag pickups and I thought they sounded too compressed
I want a nice grind and snarl, but with the same percussiveness as the JB (think nuno and EVH) with that nice cabinet 'thunk'..and I'd want it to be a little more open sounding..
what say you dammit!

Sounds like you're not real interested in the BBQ in that Lynch, any particular reason? I've only tried one in my poplar Jackson, but boy does it sound good, I'd never part with it.
I've come to almost ignore DC resistance numbers, only use them as a VERY general idea of output (if that), and nothing to do with tone. And personally I try to igonore cermanic vs Alnico. But that's just me.
Anyway, you might want to try a Custom V (Alnico magnet) too. So I'd get a BBQ, Custom V, and then get every pickup you have or can borrow, get your soldering iron warmed up, and play each for 5 minutes, swap, play, repeat. Soldering's easy. That's the best way if you can manage it, play 'em all right in a row.
My hunch is you'd like the BBQ, and one of those Custom varities (Custom, Custom V, or Custom Custom).
One easy thing you could try if you haven't already is to lower the JB away from the strings. That can work wonders sometimes. I did that with the stock pickups in my LP Classic (hot ceramics) and they sounded like different pickups after, really good.
Choosing pickups makes me insane, there's so much contractory "advice" around. Good luck.

Or you could make your own EVH esque pickup with a SD Custom Custom and a 59. I also like to lurk at an EVH forum that talks about making replicas of his instruments. During the course of those discussion they've mentioned his pickups and they've been circulating a doc that details how to mod your own pickups to cop some VH tones. You might also want to experiment with the JB/Custom Custom combo or the JB/59 combo since you already own the JB. I'll pass the doc along to you if you like. PM me if interested Later, Patrick

Shredder,
I would say try changing your speakers rather then your pickup.. Get those scumbacks.. To my ear pickups have a minimal impact on distorted tone comparred to speakers. My friend brought over a Jay turser less paul copy a few weeks ago. The pickups were stock no name pickups and the guitar sounded hardly any different then my axe which has dimarzios that I dig. To me the most important factors of good tone starts with 1. Amp 2. touch 3. speakers 4. pickup 5. wood 6. everything else.... The top three being very crucial.
