anywho, I would say get an sm57 and a decent tube mic pre amp...and BAM! that's all you need....could use either krystal sound engine or audacity...both free =D

(and that free software?)...what's a good pre amp?...i'm looking to get into this for under $250 or so

I have a pre sonus tube pre...has a 12ax7 in there....I got it for $100...as part of the payment for my b-52 when my other guitar player bought that and the gflex from me.... ART makes them...I think M audio makes them...I wouldn't say you have to go nuts with all the bells and whistles....emulators and all that crap...just something decent and solid with a tube in there and yer good to go!

nope, but it's the same kinad thing..mine only has one meter..but most of the other stuff is still there..the gain and drive of course..a couple of the buttons....I dont' think they make the one I have anymore... this one looks like a two channel deal...which is fine, I don'tt hink you need the two channels, but if it sounds good and has what you need, go for it =) I think the major point is that you don't need to drop 5 grand on something to get good home recordings, ya know?

I just use a guitar cable (monster rock, cause it's the longest one I have)...right into the sound card w/ a 1/4 to 1/8 " adapter....easey peasey japaneasey!
oh, and don't listen to that dude on HC who said that the models on the tone port are better than a real mic pre in that price range...you can't beat a tube, dude..no way, no how!
