I was just reading some old posts when I came across this one.
I'm surprised no one has replied .especially here ,with the Quick Rod being the "brown sound" amp and all.
I would think somebody has used one of these before. I am also curious about this pickup, having never played one myself.

I'm a regular at the Duncan Forum, and have used almost all their pickups. The EVH, to me, sounds like a cross between a Seth Lover and Custom Custom, but a little punchier like a 59 or Custom 5. At $160, it's debateable whether it's a better choice than a few stock models, though. Also, they're now calling it the 78 Model, just to avoid the confusion of explaining that EVH isn't affiliated with Van Halen.......the code name is 'evenly voiced harmonics', probably to avoid a lawsuit.
The pickups I like the most on vintage to highgain is the Custom 5, 59, Custom, CC, and Seth Lover. Other models are good too, but the ones I listed are guaranteed to put a smile on your face, plugged into something like a Splawn, Bogner, Marshall, etc.

I've got a SH-14 lying around .This is a Custom 5 if I'm not mistaken. I need to put it back in my Kramer which right now has the DiMarzio Evolution in it.These two pickups are like apples and oranges.
I've often wondered about the different sounds of the EVH or 78 compared to the others. From what I've read the Custom 5 and the 59 sound really good for the brown sound.

VHolic uses the 59 with very nice results....that's not a high output pup..and neither is the EVH from what I understand...

I like the 59 in the neck position in my Les Pauls, but it seems pretty bright in bridge in my opinion. My favorite pickup right now is the Gibson 57 classic in my Les Paul. I just got a Fralin humbucker that I haven't installed yet so I have high hopes for it as well. Looks like the common theme for VH stuff is a well made humbucker in the 8k-10K resistance range.

I probably should have went with the 59 for the neck in my EBMM axis, but I got a Jazz....I can't remember exactly why cause it's been awhile..lol..sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't...it's definetly great for cleans though...

I've got an old Kramer Vanguard(Randy Rhoads type body) that has a Jazz in the neck and an Invader in the bridge.I put that together back in 88 or so.What was I thinking?LOL.
I actually love the Jazz in the neck position.
I really want to try some of those Rio Grandes.I've heard nothing but good things about all of their pickups.
