This was inspired by DD's Crock post.
I have heard that if a person wants a record deal they would need two things:
An entertainment Lawyer and upfront money.
What is upfront money? That is money that you give the record company to sign you and that they use for your development as an artist.
It is a hard/bleak outlook but it makes sense to me.

The record industry and music buisness is f**ked. It's a shame and it creates these mediocre corporate rock bands that are willing to play along and "take one for the team" to please these boring white schleps in suits.

Hey DD, I don't think it is the schleps in suits. I think it is 14 year old girls (or their parents who give them money.) Apparently, they are the only ones who buy music these days.

But that may be because there is a shortage of good music for anyone with some taste in music. I partially blame the artists for succumbing as well.

They killed the rock 'n roll star.

Yes, the music biz needs some "taste makers" to step up and put the good stuff out there. Why should they go to the trouble when people with pay full price for crap.

Remember the good ole days when bands done what they wanted and music was great. Im mainly thinking of 70's rock. You had bands like Sabbath, Zeppelin, Queen, even Styx, Boston,Journey plus others and they all sounded totally different but were all on the charts! Nowadays you cant tell on from the other because of the music companies. Those 70's bands done exactly what they wanted and it was marketable with their own sound.

LOL Back in the day, music sounded awesome, No mp3s, cell phones, 300 channels of cable, no internet. We walked up hill both ways to school in a snowstorm and in the dark. BlaHAhahahaha D

"The Man ruined the ozone, he's burning down the Amazon, and he kidnapped Shamu and put her in a chlorine tank! And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man. It was called rock 'n roll.... but guess what, oh no, the Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV! So don't waste your time trying to make anything cool or pure or awesome 'cause the Man is just gonna call you a fat washed up loser and crush your soul. So do yourselves a favor and just GIVE UP!"
Memorable Quotes from The School of Rock (2003)
I love that movie..

Im glad Im old enough to remember the charts being full of such diverse groups and great music. My 12 yr old daughter always calls me in her room to listen to a new band she likes and wants to know if I like it coz it sound somewhat heavy, but to me it sounds just like the last band she had me listen too. Those bands are being told "Hey play like this or else no deal" and for God's sake "NO LEAD SOLO's". But I'm hearing more and more young players wanting to hear 80's and old school rock.

Catalog sales (old recordings) are routinely out selling new ones. Billboard calls them "catalog sales" so they don't show up on the pop charts an blow those young goons out of the water.

Concerts by 70 80's rock shows are out selling new band concerts 2 - 1 according to VH1 music news. Seems like record companies would see these results and wake up but..oh well (refer to pageplayer movie quote above)
