Nah, no round 2. I may be a Splawn nazi. I can deal with that.  If Jose came back from the grave on the back of EVH's golfcart with 5 modded Marshall's, Eddie's Viagra prescription and Valerie Bertinell's cell phone number I'd still play the Splawn's. I have heard that the Jose mod is a myth, started by Eddie himself. The magic box is pretty much stock with no major mods. Anyone else heard the same thing. D |

Jose didn't mod the old magic Marshall,, Jose didn;t even meet Eddie until like 1982 or something.

Zeke Clark (Eddie's old tech) has gone on record many times stating that Jose never touched THAT Marshall. Zeke did more work to it than anyone before or after him,, but mostly repairs not mods. That head was f'ed up by Eddie over the years so bad it was practically unusable by 1988. I used to play a club in Detroit that Zeke hung out at all the time. he used to tell us all the VH horror stories. His sister or something lived up there.. anyways, I'd trust Zeke over some Cameron heresay or some GW article anyday.

I have reason to believe that it wasn't modded. I have a friend that has an old plexi running with Varivac. He says that it is the brown sound all the way. Also, Ted Nugent said that when he played through the "magic box" it sounded like, Ted Nugent playing through a plexi head. Eddie plugged in and started playing and it sounded like "Eddie Van Halen." Eddies fingers + Plexi head + Varivac = brown sound. I am not really up for a debate, and I don't care if the amp was modded or not, I am just trying to pass on the information as I have heard it. D |

Well if there was a switch or a screw it could be a thousand different things having nothing to do with mods or sound. Like I said its all heresay. Zeke also told me that the pics of that head you see are NOT the orginal head case. Apparently the tech before Zeke, Rudy Leiren was offered a ton of dough to grab that head for some producer or something.. instead of just taking it, he tried to swap out the inards with another head case.. and was busted in the process... but Eddie left it in the newer head case. this resulted in Leiren being fired in about 1985,, they've since made up and Leiren came back on the Balance record i think. Like i said, believe what you want,, but I'll take a direct source over Vom's old Hit Parader magazines any day. |
