TJ,, anyone.. help me.
I'm going to see EJ and Satch this month so I thought I'd pick up the new Eric Johnson cd "Bloom"..
WTF? Seriously,, this is the biggest waste of $13 I've ever spent. This is the biggest piece 'O poop I've heard in years,, and those vocal tunes,, oh my god. What is this guy thinking. He can't write a tune, so why would he try,, Theres nothing on the cd even resembling anything with any chops at all.. I love the older stuff and Cliffs of Dover will always be one of the top 10 instrumentals ever,, but damm this sucks badly.
..and after all these years he doesn't ever spice his licks up with anything different its the same 5/4 pentatonic licks hes playing for 30 years. BLAH.
Sorry for the rant,, but when you buy a cd listen to it once and never want to listen to it again,, thats pretty bad.

I must say (as much as I love EJ) I thought the same thing when I listened to it. Almost like he just said "Eh I'm bored this'll do" I've listened to it several times and there are a few good tunes on there. THat tribute to Jerry Reed is really cool. Seems like he recorded everything really dry on that cd. It's stale playing to me. I don't know man? Good question. How do you put out material like "Cliffs of dover, CAmel's night out, Righteous, etc. etc. and then put out "summer jam" on Bloom. I guess he just wants to go in a different direction. I wish he'd find his way back to the old stuff. Go buy the DVD of Austin city limits. That will freak you out.
When I saw him last year on the Bloom tour it was worth seeing. He still blazes live and did some killer renditions of some Beatles tunes. I'd love to come hang out for that concert. It's going to be an awesome show.

I just think the well runs dry after awhile...I mean, how much good stuff CAN a person have in them? the well's deeper for some more than others, but it's a finite sum my friend... and yes, it IS depressing.... but if it makes you feel any better, you're MY hero craig ~swoon~ lol

You think about it. All those major hits that Johnson has, have been being played for almost 20 years or more. I've got bootlegs from way back when of him doing Camel's night out years before "Venus Isle" came out. Same thing with "Righteous and Cliffs of Dover" It's kind of like "Eruption" Eddie never did anything remotely close to matching that level of raw playing since that recording (imo) After a certain point the well does run dry. It's hard to keep reinventing yourself.

I gotta say,, Greg Howes newest CD "extraction" is phenomenal. Thats one guy who honestly has never put out anything bad ever, he gets better and better.
..and Scott Henderson is better and better too.

I think reinventing yourself is stupid. Sorry, but your not going to reinvent the wheel and there is nothing on guitar that hasn't been done, so why not stick to what your good at and carve your own slightly (or overly) derivative niche at what your good at. Seriously. Somewhere along the lines people get so pretentious and think they need to change.

I think (depending on the level of the player) you can always put out something that's tasty. It just takes some serious time and thought to do so. Maybe some of these players lose their spark that they once had and become disassociated with the guitar. Writers block can drive some people mad.
